Title: SPACE 1889 FIGURES
Post by: VonAkers on March 21, 2017, 10:27:36 AM
Hi Guys
I have resisted manfully, but can hold out no longer..  ;D
I am going to launch into Space 1889.
Any thoughts on what figures to use ??
Your feed back would be most appreciated.
Cheers

Midnight Workshop's Victorian Sci-Fi range springs to mind, http://www.artizandesigns.com/list.php?man=22&cat=157&page=1

.. plus Artizan, Iron Duke, Perry Miniatures, etc.. etc.. for generic Victorian colonial type models.

Hard to mix with current ranges, but I still love the RAFM originals. It's nice to match the images in the books.

Admittedly, a bit limited, though.

Also, for the canal and hill Martians, look at various elf figs. Can't give specific suggestions.

Agreed.  You can't beat the RAFM figures, and they regularly have sales, making them very affordable.

While somewhat different in style, the Bronze Age figures rock!

The Rafm canal/hill Martians and high Martians were noticeably bigger than the Earthmen, in keeping with the design from the original RPG.  So, while the Rafm Soldiers of the Queen set are very scawny compared to more modern 28mm figures, the Martians can still hold their own. So it would be quite reasonable to get your favourite British (or French or German or US...) colonial figures, and still match them against the Rafm Martians - the change being that the Martians will be about the same size as the Earthmen instead of being taller than them.

IIRC Highlander Studios does them in 15mm if the smaller scale interests you.

Guys
Thanks for all the feed back so far.
I did want to stay as close to the Space 1889 theme as possible, and in 28mm.
Cheers.

I've used the old Grenadier/Copplestone sculpted wood elves

Also, for the canal and hill Martians, look at various elf figs. Can't give specific suggestions.

All of the above.

RAFM are the original Space 1889 and if you can get conversions to fit their Martians you won't be far off the theme. Old style elves are easiest to convert. Sadly RAFM crowd funded project to create more Martians and creatures didn't get off the ground a few years ago. Though the ideas for new sculpts must be out there still if RAFM and Frank Chadwick wanted to expand the range/licence new ones.

Most late 1800's human 28mm figs can be used for "red men" ,whether they are Europeans or from other parts of earth.

Ironclad Wonderful characters and Moon dwellers, plus easy convertable Martians.
Foundry for explopers, European troops etc
North Star/Artizan You name it they do it in one or more of their sub companies
RAFM's own but they are more 25mm or old 28mm
Copplestone do a useful navy officers set which can be used for many European nations plus German Marines and British Naval Bridge sailors. Whoops they are with North Star now.
Perry do a wonderful Navy and Army ranges.
Old Glory

Any 19th century range.

Check out peoples blogs ,including main and see some of conversion ideas.

Good luck, have fun and welcome to Space 1889.Warning it takes you over ;)

The RAFM Martians are attributed to Bob Murch, who did elves, I THOUGHT, for Gren as well...

Ergo, the reuse of some elven figures.

Earthers, you can find plenty.

As for Messer Chadwick, pretty sure his connection to the Highlander Studios wares supporting his Mars Needs Steam 15mm rules would seem to preclude much interest in [further development of 1899] 25-28mm....

You could also use the girls from Hinterland Miniatures as well. They have their Hussars which would fit in.

If you want to have figures who matched the original RAFM range in size, you can try FOUNDRY original Old West, Boer war or Zulu war ranges or ASKARI MINIATURES. I don't know if all their ranges have the same size but the colonial germans are compatible with RAFM minis.

A very nice discussion on Copplestone's Wood Elves as perfect Martians for Space 1889:
