Post by: alcal on March 25, 2017, 04:17:12 PM
Hi guys
Just in the throws of creating a set of 28mm Stalingrad boards , got to finish 6 for June the 10th.
This first part is the sewers and cellars they are meant to have the choice of fully covered or open and damaged with the buildings to have no centre to the base so as to expose the cellars.

I dont have Twitter but I've have a habit of taking sneak peeks on your Twitter account and was floored when I came upon this. great that you post here aswell so I can comment.
This is simply amazing. Your layout and use of sewage, cellars and trenches as an sub surface network is truly inspired. Great idea and spectacular execution I can tell already. Very clever with the arches at the end of each sewage section for an "underground" (fake) connection to the next section. Also really nice with the removable "roofs" for the underground network that are sunk into the board, again a really neat solution.
Will you have roads and/or building fixed (ie removable of course but with a given place) on the surface?
Also, what sheet are you using for the walls? They look great.
Really looking forward to follow this project!

Hi Mattias
Yeh the fake ends also represent the arched sewer but just to much to create every where  BUT when I put the damaged roofs on I might be able to arch a few of those as well(more work)
No roads the place is a shit hole bombed to crap!
The buildings can go anywhere but I will be mindfull of the cellar size and shape and im thinking that the hole in the building centre will be surrounded by broken floor boards.
The brick paper is off e bay laser print for 28mm its O gauge
The railway marshalling yard will represent the `Tennis Racket` and the factory will be the `Lazur` chemical plant.
Cheers AL

Wow.  Simply amazing.

You have to keep us up to date on this project.  Most of us can only dream of having the space/time/skills to make and play on terrain that wonderful.

This looks fantastic!

One technique question: I'd like to cut a small lip out of foam for dropping a board in so it is level with the surface, like you have done.  Is there a good trick for doing this you can share?

I made all the downward cuts first to give me my outer vertical edge to a depth of 4-5 mm , then I got a piece of card 3mm less than the foam height rested a new stanley blade/scalpel side ways on and cut the horizontal edge.

This is so good it hurts. Some great designs there. It adresses some of my hang ups with many ruins lacking staircases for instance.
I'm interested in if you have planed the surface of the table itself. I'm thinking it is a bit of a conflict of interest in having a heavily bombed surface with a lot of rubble and craters against the possibility of placing buildings in different locations. Or will you have designated places for the buildings and go for elevation/craters/rubble elsewhere?

you totally need one of these stalingrad fountains from eureka. It will be just perfect.

I understand Nic is planning a round, WW2 era version of that.

Im not exactly sure of what your asking but if I explain the layout may be I will hit the right answer.

To make this table as generic as possible but still have as much diorama look as possible im going for an amalgamation of the two types .Some boards will be flat but sand covered as a base and some will be permanent diorama type boards.

The factory boards 2 x 600mmx600mm will be a set piece , and one of the ruins and cellar board will be a set piece as will two of the trench boards , so that's like 5 boards out of twelve with the other 7 boards being flat(including the three sewer boards).
Add to this drop on scatter and rubble and drop on railway and it will give us endless layouts much in the same vein as my WW1 layout.

Also because ive used the 50mm blue foam there is  an opportunity to add the river  bank leading down to the river, to another set of boards ;D

Cheers AL

Hi
Needed to create some rolling stock for the boards, the scale is a bit mixed up but here goes:
Russia is narrow gauge in WW2 so HO/OO track is fine but I needed `O `gauge or `ON 30 `Gauge for the carriages. So I cracked of the bogies of HO/OO to match the track and hand built some quick carriages to reach the scale I needed.
Still have to do a couple of flat cars but under advise for my m8 Ade waiting for the early T34`s before sorting theses out.

The open top carriages are metal and will be a grey colour but the rest are wooden and will be a weathered darkish red.

Cheers AL

Hi Richard
Yeh except for the sand and brick  in the rubble areas as they are just to big everything else is super glued, makes the job a lot quicker.I use a tub of REACT 20g medium or thick depending.

Fantastic! I really do like the design, with the variations between "jagged" and normal flat top on some of the long walls. All "jagged" would probably been too much.

Al, what are you using to cut your MDF?

Rich

Hi Richard

90% is cut with a `snap of blade full length with tissue paper wrapped around the end i`m holding set against a steel ruler score once properly and then its a guide to scoring several more times for 3mm MDF for 2mm MDF I also get away with using a scalpel .Once cut light quick sand on flat surface with a block both sides and edge .All lines are either tape and ruler measured or using a square.

Cheers AL

I do have a TCT pull saw in the leanto but don't use it much.

Only just discovered this thread. This is not an ordinary build thread but a wargames terrain Masterclass, and a great job with the wip pictures, very inspirational. As an aside, and this is entirely meant as a compliment, but I felt as if I was being taken through a 3D rendition of all my favourite "Call Of Duty" Russian maps, Stalingrad, Pavlov's House and Railyard. I await the completion of this outstanding piece of work with bated breath. This is not Wargames terrain it is a diorama of museum quality! Truly inspirational.

Finished the chimneys, finished the treble storage tanks, finishes the factory corridor link, changed my mind about the flat black tar roofs and added the ribbed type(note to self.....idiot ).dressed roof stone added.
Next job the chemical vats and I guess that's about it,then its ready for final paint with the rest of the boards.Still have lots of little extra`s to do of course plus about 60 Russians to defend it!

The picture is on magnetic paper I can swap it for one of Adolf before they arrive :-)

The factory was going to be defended by Germans but as with history the Russians never lost it so due to me painting one platoon of Russians plus some support  and Ade Deacon painting two platoons of Germans (including one assault pioneer platoon)we`ve swapped the scenario around.

It was Adolf himself who ordered Paulus not to attack the Lazur Cheers AL

Just a few more sand bags a couple of extra holes in one of the chimneys and I think i`ve finished. want to do some drop on bits like barbed wire and don't forget this layout is designed to take a bucket of scatter as well.

Cheers for all of the encouragement along the way.

It sounds like you think about bringing the city to the Wolga beaches.
The way you built it up, would give a good chance for sculpted beaches with defences and nice landing points.
If you should look for ships, you will find some here:

Air recognition swastika flags on the 251/10 & staff car , the one with three on is an ambulance and they are red cross flags.I cant show swastika`s on this site).

The MMG`s don't sit high enough in windows and bomb creaters ,those are magnetic packers to lift them in these positions

Absolutely amazing, it would be a real pleasure to game on that table! Have you thought of painting one of the T-34s as a vehicle right off of the assembly line? A number of T34s were driven out of the factory right into combat, sometimes crewed by workers and the female drivers who usually shuttled the tanks around the complex. Here's an idea of how that could look:

Unless you are using Chiltern's monsters, which, judging by your photos, you aren't, then you'll find that they do mix in. Not as bulky as BTD but a good match height wise. I have mixed BTD, Artizan and Warlord with my Eureka partisans.

Hi
In the sewers I glued backing card to all vertical faces the glue I used was white glue called Unibond/PVA , look back through the first picturs on page one.

Is this what you need to know?

Ps All the flat surfaces at the street level are Unibond/PVA and sand.

I am not Alan, nor do I share his skills.  However, when I use sand and PVA it is important to add a second coat of PVA when the first coat and sand has dried,  This then holds it all in place.  In fact it's almost as strong as concrete when that second top coat dries.

I have no recommendations for PVA, nor can I remember any that have not worked(though there have been a few).

For horizontal surfaces (or those that can be made horizontal) you can follow the railway modeller method of putting the sand down, wetting it slightly with a water sprayer (as used by gardeners) and applying a watered down PVA solution (with a tiny amount of the magic ingredient of washing up liquid) by pipette. It sets like concrete.

An alternative is to mix sand and powdered glue and apply the sprayer over it.

It was a great table to play on.  We played the Germans in the second game of the day at OML5, the annual Lardy Games Day in Evesham, and came within an Ace of victory, but the Soviets repulsed out final assault.  But who cares, it was just fantastic to play on what is not model railway standard terrain, but film set standard.  Just brilliant.

perhaps set up on the floor of the Sistine Chapel?

Have you had luck with a particular brand or type of PVA glue?

Cheap PVA contains filler. It's best to use a full strength formula for this sort of task, such as Gorilla Glue, which is a US brand. Deluxe Materials and others also make some with modelling use in mind.

There`s always a possibility of that,i also really wanted to do the river boards as i have enough height to run the gully`s in as well. Another time i will just get the urge and create something for it.Remember this was six boards to start with and on two occasions i`ve added three more plus the extra buildings so ever evolving 8)

Hi
Had some fun with teddy bear stuffing to create these two smokes for the game.I cut out a piece of MDF  and glued a load of coins to it for weight during which i trapped a folded over piece of wire into the stack then  a bit at a time i superglued the wire and pushed cotton fibre down onto it until i had reached the top doing this about severn times with clumps.
To paint them i first sprayed them totally black  then from the bottom sprayed red then yellow then a all over mid grey then a final hint of white near the top.
Cheers AL

Great work, this is such a treat to watch.

Just one comment and I hate to be picky with such great work but when a fire burns it actually burns brightest (and yellowest) at the bottom with flames going from that to orange and red before the black smoke. It's a mistake I was guilty of until someone pointed this out to me.

This is a good example as it shows petrol on fire, but you can see that it is yellow in the centre and slowly comes out to orange and red:

(https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/1024x768q90/924/aKeSmM.jpg) (https://imageshack.com/i/poaKeSmMj)

I found giving the base a coat of yellow first and then taking a brush and dabbing and dry brushing around the edges with orange and red shades helped get that effect on this flame and smoke that I made using clumping foam:

Amazing work :) Inspiration of the worst kind! :P

When the supposedly empty oil tanks were hit and turned out to be very, very full of oil, the story goes that Stalingrad Front Headquarters kept signalling for a response: "where are you? Where are you?"

Eventually the reply came back: "we're where the most smoke and flames are."

this looks unbelievable...  :o great, great stuff!

small question about the blue foam. I noticed you glued this foam boards on mdf-boards (my guess is 24" x 24"). Did you reinforce the corners as this foam tends to be easily damage by placing are bumping into 'things'?

I did coat it with PVA/Unibond/White wood glue then paintedit , but your right you do have to be careful with it,if i wasn`t so lazy it would have been(and still can be) reinforced on the corners by cutting the foam back and gluing something tougher against the cut back corners.

WARFARE READING 17th/18th NOVEMBER 2018

Used CoC rules , four German platoons with four support choices each attacking three Russian platoons with four support choices each.

Half the German infantry and one Russian squad are from the collection of my buddy Ade Deacon as are all the fighting vehicles.

700-800 hours  divided by 30-35 hours a week in three seperate builds over the last year the main six boards with the factories and most sewers 3 months , the second and third 3 board builds with the trenches and the chemical tanks and the tenement blocks took about five weeks each.
