Title: Roman Villa Rustica and Church
Post by: Richard in Sachsen on March 27, 2017, 03:23:02 PM
Back from the work bench with some terrain just finished up today. First is my villa. Funny how I got this thing; I ordered a Najewitz Type III Roman House in December and instead I got a villa. I wrote to Jens about the mistake and wrote about my surprise at receiving a 100 euro villa for a 30 euro house! He replied that I should imagine the surprise of the guy in the UK who ordered a 100 euro villa and got a 30 euro house!

Anyway, I had wanted this villa for a while and bought the type III house in January for the price of the villa. So, after a couple of weeks and a box of Milliput later, here it is.

The trim paint scheme was taken from the Arbeia reconstructed fort along Hadrian's Wall, where they used a lot of colours like this in Arbeia's interior courtyard.

The fountain is Thormillion and comes pretty plain. I used 1/72 plastic Greek Civilians (can't remember the manufacturer but I don't think they're made anymore, got one sprue of them off eBay). They're painted bronze as usual and then have a coat of Noch patina, same for the lion faces. I used an old Ral Partha lion and made a blue stuff mould of its face here. Thanks to Rumacara, who explained how to do fountains in his thread, I used Vallejo still water and gel water texture. The bottom is Noch textured paper that I used in the church and the still water has a couple of drops of Lifecolor Lime Green Grime Effects mixed into the first layer, one drop mixed into the second and the rest was clear layered. A couple of Noch fish are in the layers as well as Noch laser-cut water lilies. Finally, the plants in the urns are simply rubberised horsehair with flower flocking.

The church is from Curtsey's. I really liked the modular nature of the church. The flooring is Noch textured paper and the ivy is Army Painter. On the roof, the textured vegetation is enhanced with Lifecolor moss and lichen.

Love both buildings.
The courtyard is really outstanding.
Church mice problems, looks like a church cat is needed. ;)

Thanks fellas. Yes, armchair, I was quite surprised how taking pictures in the afternoon natural sunlight can enhance the pictures. I usually use a little fold-up studio but today was such a nice day, Spring just arrived, that I tried it outside. I do like how the pictures came out, the natural sunlight makes them almost into holiday snaps. What a wonderful compliment.

Thank you both, I'm glad you liked them.

Oh, and @Vongoosewink - those flagstones in the courtyard are those plaster flagstones from Menta Modelbau that I mentioned in your Walls of Troy thread, if you're eventually looking for roads and city ground. They're cast in various stone colors and they have all shapes and sizes. They also sell silicone moulds to cast your own. The Roman roads set is pretty nice and I'll be using those for my own Roman city project.

Thank you very much, Chema. I didn't use your airbrush technique as I'm not so proficient with an airbrush. I just used Lifecolor Broken Plaster from the Debris and Rubble set with brush-on coat of Army Painter soft tone. I didn't mind the browness as the model indicates this is old plaster as it's broken off in places revealing the brick underneath.

Lesson learned on the assembly: I would use small triangles of plastic or wood for the insides of the building walls to get a 90 degree angle. As you see on your model pieces, the resin is very thin and it has a tendency to bow. I didn't do this on the stores buildings and so when they were assembled, I had a bear of a time getting them to fit correctly with the main house and the courtyard wall. As you can see, the courtyard walls are a bit off and I ended up using a bit of yellow-grey Milliput to cover the gaps and seams. The roofs are a bit tricky, too. The piece to go over the gates is a bit thin as well. Here I used a bit of wood (from a fireworks rocket that landed in our yard on New Years) and widdled it down. I wanted working gates so I used wire in the gates and drilled holes in the plaster flagstones and the wood piece, so they swing open and closed. Still, the doors are a bit crooked because the entrance was too wide for them because I didn't get those 90 degree angles I needed from assembling the store buildings in the beginning.

So... I think it turned out but had I spent the extra effort to do that in the beginning, it would've saved quite a bit of heartache and fudging later on.

Very cool. I just used some of those 'Ancient Life' figures as statues a few days ago :)

Thank you. Ancient Life, that's the series line, i couldn't remember. They make for very good statues in 28mm, I think.
