That would have been interesting to pit the two Pathan entries vs. each other...

Great use of accent colors, Cap'n!

Yes, smashing entry, Richard! And we not only used the same miniatures for painting, but old Perry Pathans for the background!  8)

What did you think about the quality of the new Perry pathans, Richard? I found very bad castings and it was no real fun to paint them ...

I normally try and avoid seeing the names of the painters so that my vote is based on the images. However, there are times when this just doesn't work as the style is so distinctive!  Beautiful painting.

I agree, Michael. Lovely figures - really just new versions of the original Pathans Michael Perry did for Foundry. But the castings...  :( yes, not very good, and quite difficult painting...

I have some more new Perry metals for my round 5 entry, and for some reason they are much better castings, and a pleasure to paint.

So these are the new Pathans? I am not going to order them if the casting is crap, or perhaps with the exception of the artillery piece.

Well, I wouldn't say crap, and they are, as usual, very characterful figures. But the casting wasn't terribly clean.

I'm a big Perry fan, but as I've said before, they are now such brilliant, experienced artists that their metal figures can sometimes seem a bit impressionistic and dashed off.
Like many forms of art, they look fantastic from a little way away. But when you actually look very close up (like if you're trying to paint the things!) you realise that some of the details are actually quite crudely done.

But I've always thought that Michael Perry's Afghan tribesmen for Foundry, done - what - 20 years ago, remain some of the best wagames figures anywhere, ever. And he's now effectively produced a second batch that match in almost perfectly. So I couldn't really resist.

The real answer of course, is for them to produce a set of plastic Pathans - with firearm options that would let them be customised for any period from the 1840s to the 1920s...

That's what I'm waiting for...  :)

Beautiful work yet again Captain! :-* I also think the Perry's really do need to do some plastic Pathans.

That would indeed be very useful. Hopefully cavalry to.

I have quite a lot of pathans but since I keep adding units to my Indian army I need pathans, their antiquated firearms in mind, at a ratio 1:3.
