Title: New range of WW2 figures released by Enemy Lines.co.uk
Post by: Malamute on March 05, 2009, 02:26:43 PM
A very good friend of mine has just released the first of a new range of WW2 figures in 36 mm based on the campaign in Italy.

His first releases include four packs of Brits and German paras with loads to follow including command, support weapons, casualties, POW's etc.

I have seen the castings first hand and a lot of the greens for the forthcoming releases. They are very, very nice figures, full of character and what I would describe as realistic poses with some unusual character type figures and they paint up really well.

I hope you guys like them, I think they are very exciting.

The photos don't in my opinion do the figures as much credit as they deserve.

They are nice (I like the Brits especially) an unuasual choice of scale 36mm?

They look pretty good.

...an unusual choice of scale 36mm?

I wonder why?

Personally, though I occasionally paint other scales - 15mm and recently some 1/48th - I prefer 28mm.

I'm not into WW2, but seeing this I really ask myself:

Why on earth do manufacturers create new figure "scales"?  o_o

Nobody needs a new scale. And you wouldn't sell more if your new scale is only exotic enough.

Believe me.

From what I gather, 36mm is now what "heroic 28" used to be in the mid-1990s, and it is (foot-to-eye) a good match for 1/48th scale vehicles...

... but I agree. I have a lot of 28mm, and 36 is too close to that, especially if following 28 aesthetics - these figures look good, and I may get a squad of those Fallschirmjägers, but since I cannot mix them into my 28 armies, their appeal is limited.

The names that manufacturers give their scales are increasingly irrelevant, also.  For me it always comes down to a comparison picture.  What one company calls 30mm (or even 36mm?) may be quite close to some othe company's so-called 28mm.  I know that companies are trying to be truthful about the actual measurements of their figures, but it often just confuses customers, IMO.

My understanding is the figures are scaled to fit with 1/48 scale vehicles and accessories.
He has also been  designing them round squad based skirmish games, which work with bigger figures.
I am not into WW2 at all, never have been, but having seen these in the lead and green I am definately going to get some.

I know that George Hatzopoulos has recently sculpted some 1/48 German paras.

So is 36mm and 1/48 scale the same?

A 5' 10" Man is about  1778 mm tall.

Divide 1778 by 48 = 37mm

So 37mm to top of head would be about right for 1/48 scale.

I got into WWII with Nick Eyre's Projekt X line and Richard Ansell's WWII figs, both of which are 1/48th scale (the next big thing, remember?), and 36mm in height. So I welcome more 36mm WWII.

I especially need a Russian Command Pack, a set Nick/Richard never got to before things kind of died out.

The Enemy Lines heads look big, but beggars can't be choosy.

The overall look of the miniatures is chunky. He heads look fine in the lead.

He was telling me earlier that he has been finishing off painting some of the command packs and MG groups and has been photographing them. The photographs are better so you should see more unveiled over the next few days which will give you a better idea.

I realise this is an old thread but do you know how they fit in with Ebob minis? Apparently I have a set of Ebob Great Escape figs coming for a significant event in less than 2 weeks, so I am thinking of adding them to the forthcoming POWs in my collection.

Nice, but why the odd scale? I, for one, won't be buying, since they will not mix with my collection of 25-28mm figures...

 :o ?????? No one buy 36mm figures for WW2!
I have 20 mm, 28 mm and 1/35 (ca. 54mm). That's bring me and other guys enough space for variation.

A other question: Why not WW2 plastic figures like the "Perry's plastics", Victrix or Warlord games?!
And more vehicles in plastics in 28mm scale.
And some more "exotic" nations like Poles, Rumanians, Netherlands, Norwegians etc.

Ever and ever the late war period - everybody makes it  :?

That's it - for creative conversions!
