Title: Playing Pulp Alley with ancients ?
Post by: rumacara on April 19, 2017, 10:36:43 AM
Hello all

I´ve tried a game with Pulp Alley so far but i would like to know the following:

Is it possibel to play with ancients (romans, greeks, etc) ?
If so is there any rules i should change or adapt ?

I would like to play both solo and with a friend so what set of rules/cards should i choose for solo games and with other people?

I have the basic rules and deck, pulp leagues, gadgets guns and vehicles.

Thank you for Reading this and any help and ideas are welcome.

Cheers

Rui

Don't see why not, range weapons such as bows, slings and javelins will take the place of guns.

Definitely! Dad ran a really fun Jason and the Argonauts campaign using Pulp Alley and it was tons of fun.

I don't think you'd have to change anything, but we wanted things to be more Brawly so we had two setting rules:
1. All characters started with 0 dice in Shoot, so if you wanted to Shoot you had to buy Marksman and that only gave you 1d.
2. All shooting over 12" suffered an extra -1d penalty.

We have a special Solo Deck designed to replace the normal Fortune Deck for solo games. The solo rules and cards are included in the Tomb of the Serpent campaign or you can get it separately.

I hope you have fun.  :D

I also like using the Armored ability for some of the tougher monsters and Terrors. And you might also look through the various Settings in Pulp Leagues. There's a good chance one or two will work nicely -- depending on the style of campaign you want. AND check out the weapon kits as well.

Please let us know if you have any questions.

HAVE FUN

Thanks mr. Phipps.
I ordered the Tomb of the Serpent in pdf for the solo deck and rules plus some more scenarios.

What i have are gangs of rome (unarmoured figures armed with axes, swords and knifes) plus some roman legionaires both with mail and lorica segmentata plus shield and gladius/pillum.
The enemies of rome might be iberians, gauls or germans with generic equipment.
I wont be using monsters and Terrors. I will try a more "historical" approach on the scenarios.

That sounds like a really fun setting. I have been wanting to do that for quite some time. I hope we get to see more!  :D

Rui,
I've played quite a bit of Pulp Alley.  Mostly generic 1930s stuff, but alos Indiana Jones games and even some Firefly based SciFi.  It will work with just about anything, and is a lot of .  You just have to be prepared for a slight learning , as it is different from just about any other set of rules.

Thanks Nick and mr. Phipps. :)
From what the little experience showed me its a set of rules quite diferent from what i´m used and yes it has a potencial for use it with several periods/scenarios/themes.
I will try solo first and then i will set a scenario to try with my brother.

I would recommend Pulp Leagues as well, its got a couple of ideas for Sword & Sorcery fantasy and Swashbuckling that can crossover into Ancients along with a multitude of other useful bits.
