Zvezda 1:144 Messerschmitt BF109F
« on: 29 July 2017, 05:22:52 AM »

Another addition to my 15mm WWII German forces is this 1:144 scale Messerschmitt BF109F by Zvezda.

The mottling along the sides of the fuselage was very problematic. I tried airbrushing it, but I've never really got the knack of doing very fine-line airbrushing on non-absorbent surfaces; I inevitably get horrible spidery blobs everywhere. So this one has just been done with a brush by building up several layers of very thin, translucent paint. I'm not that enthralled with the end result, but it's better than my attempts at airbrushing.

The BF109F is a little too late for my preferred period, which is 1939-40, but it will serve the purpose on the tabletop, which is to say "I am a German single-seat fighter plane".

Bottom view — you can see the bolt that I use to attach the plane to my magnetic flight stands.

Nice paint job, the camouflage effect is very good.

Well at least it does not have a Merlin engine ^__^.

Looks great!

Thanks for sharing.

Side splotching is best done with paint brushes, as you've done, IMHO.

Good to see them producing the Me-109F.

I need more of those, as well as a bunch of Gustavs.

Galland got a 109F toward the end of 1940, don't know whether he did a fighter sweep, over Blighty in it though. Molders got one too and he might have used it over southern England in 1940

You can also dab paint on ith a (nearly dry) sponge.

I see it's not carrying any, um, tail marking. Did that come on the decal sheet? Or not?

No. It seems to be becoming pretty standard these days to pretend that that symbol never really existed.

If I remember the model book I read as a child, various countries (including our OGH's) do not allow the sale of anything with that  symbol (see symbol use sticky thread).

It is probably more economical to only do one decal sheet rather than two with all the logistics problems and potential mix ups etc.
