Normans for SAGA – an auspicious start?

I've painted the casualty figure from the Conquest plastic Normans box as a 'warm up' for painting a warband for SAGA – it will be a fatigue marker once I have it based up.

I went for a deathly pallor on the skin and probably went a little too far, since he looks like he's been dead for days as opposed to minutes. Still a few other kinks to work out – I think the horse needs a bit less contrast on the highlighting, and I need to play with my camera a bit more to get it to focus properly, but other than that I'm reasonably happy with how this came out.

I know it's just me, but that top view needs some kit bashing with a big XXX jug in his open hand, a bundle around the horse's neck and one on the base near the horses mouth all tipped out.

I can see what you mean by the skin, but perhaps that can be covered by a back story.  The dude was already in pretty bad shape when they lined up for battle in the morning so he wasn't so much a casualty of the battle as it just finishing him off, hence the dead for a long time look?  Maybe?

Thanks for all the nice comments. I've started assembling some knights so hopefully I'll be able to get some paint on them this weekend.

Humakt, I have some little 7mm dice that I was planning to put one on this guy's base to show the amount of fatigue the unit is suffering. Having a downed knight in goofy rigor mortis pose on a ~50mm base for every point of fatigue would be slightly excessive.

With most all of my markers lately, I've been modeling the base to accept really small dice, like 4-5 mm dice, very tiny.  I bought like a lot of 50 of them from a specialty store for really cheap.  So now I have a counter for rep'ing multiple fatigues or wounds or whatever.

Or you could even do like my buddy does with his where he has like skewer sticking up off the base that he drops skull beads on to represent wounds taken.

Great painting on the Norman casualty.  If you still want to use him as a fatigue marker you could mount him on a turn counter and move his (or the horses) head to show the current fatigue points.

Id say the contrast on the horse is fine like this and the focus on the picture too. great stuff and im very curious to see what is still coming. Keep up the good work!

Whatever you want to use it for ( casualty marker, fatigue marker, beer counter or scenery ), I like him. Nice "soft" pj, great choice of colours. Like him.
