Thanks to all you sculptors
« on: 06 April 2009, 11:10:32 AM »
I had a group of figures that I always wanted and thought they would be nice but no one every made them so I decided to make them myself.  And all I have to say is WOW!!!  :oThank god for all you sculptors out there pushing putty, it’s not all that easy.  So a big thanks to you who had sculpted all the figures we love.  :)

Right now I must say that I am enjoying working on my secret figures (I’ll post them when I am done) but getting small detail is very challenging to say the least and I cheated by starting with a sculpting dolly (more like a completed nude figure) So I would have to say this is more of a conversion but I am sculpting most if not all of the clothing.

The most important thing I have learned so far is  Patience is the key. I can’t tell you how hard that is for me so far I must have screwed up something like ten times by squishing what I had sculpted and trying to do more without proper drying. :'( So now do a little bit and then move to the next figure.  I should have learned from the Quar kit(child) I sculpted a bit ago but noooooooo. ;) Any ways that’s what I am working on now.  Have fun with whatever you are doing

I agree completely bandit86 !!!

I'm a professional jewelery designer and a sculptor.  I am in lost in awe at what the miniature sculptors do.  (I mean slack-jawwed drooling awe !)  I am grateful and thankful.  And I salute you sir for giving it a try yourself!  I'm looking forward to seeing your work!

Hmm . . .  Maybe, just maybe, someday I'll give it a try myself . . .  Any pointers on the lessons you've learned ???

I have done a bit of sculpting with green stuff in my time and I can offer a few tips.

Work on several figures at once so you don't waste any green stuff (its not cheap).

To speed up curing , pop in the oven at 100 degree celcius to fast cure for 10-15 minutes. Don't do this too many times though.

Add little bits of putty at a time to rough out the shape and then start smoothing with sculpting tool and paint brush and a bit of water (or spit).

When the putty is first made up it is too sticky. wait 15 minutes for it to lose the stickyness before sculpting.

Good luck

Crikey, sir. I'm looking forward to today. Up diddly up, down diddly
down, whoops, poop, twiddly dee - decent scrap with the fiendish Red
Baron - bit of a jolly old crash landing behind enemy lines - capture,
torture, escape, and then back home in time for tea and medals.

I use a metal box with a 40 watt light bulb in. This sets the putty in around 20mins and can sit on the desk. If you make a mistake let it cure. When dry you can just pick off the offending part and it will leave the area clean and ready for another try. Trying to remove putty which is wet and can make you previous work grainy.

very fine grade wet and dry sandpaper 400 or 800 with water can sand green stuff smooth once cured.

cheers
