Greek War of Independence
« on: 10 February 2018, 08:23:31 PM »
Does anyone still do the Greek War of Independence? I bought a load of Steve Barber minis, and quite a few from Brigade I think it was. Was it just one of those fads?

I have looked at the Steve Barber ones so many times and done nothing about it, problem for me is lack of knowledge and not sure what to do about artillery etc, the figures look great and I do get soooo tempted! :)

Shipka posted a lot of useful stuff 4-5 years ago and that, plus a holiday in the Balkans got me into the period.  The loveliness of the Steve Barber range helped too. Although the range isn’t that big, you can boost numbers from other manufacturers ranges, Napoleon in Egypt being pretty useful.

There are a few books on the progress of the War, but not much, at least in English, on the sort of things you need for putting together little lead armies.

Often considered, never done - I like the look of the Steve Barber figures, but to be frank there isn't enough variety in the poses to really pull me in since my 28mm projects are usually at the large-skirmish (i.e. Sharp Practice) level, so I like to get plenty of different poses into my units. I appreciate of course that more poses = greater cost and for small wargames companies that's not necessarily an option.

Part of it is probably likewise not knowing enough about it so not knowing where to go to for other figures to mix in. Ottomans/Turks etc more so, but less options on the Greek front I think? If I could source figures from 2 or 3 other manufacturers to build around the Steve Barber ones I'd very probably dive right in.

There are good histories in English if you search Amazon or look up some of my posts on here.

There is a lot of interest out there, some game the inter Greek feuds, others use the Greeks against British or French during the Napoleonic wars.

Several gamers I know use a mix of both Turks and Greeks to fight the Barbary wars

And cor those into early Colonial the Turks for the siege of Kars

A good book for inspiration is The Diamond of Jannina

My friend and I bought a lot of the Barber GWI figures.  Our project got side tracked into the British Invasion of Egypt in 1801.  Most of the figures got recycled into various British trained Albanians and Ottoman forces.

At some point we may do a "what if" campaign since Napoleon also considered Greece as another destination for his expedition instead of Egypt.
Clear the battlefield and let me see
All the profit from our victory.
