Robot Republic - pulp sci-fi faction
« on: 02 June 2009, 02:04:01 PM »

My main figure project for the last couple of months has been pulp sci-fi figures.  I hope to use them in game systems such as Fantastic Worlds, Chaos on Cronos, Mutants and Death Rayguns and any other system that requires a small amount of rockets and rayguns type figures.  My Little Green Men and SPD are sub sections of the project that I have already put up some photos of.

One of the factions that I have been putting together is a collection of robots.  They have a 2000AD feel to them I think, slightly different to the more 50's style 'bots that tend to be used for pulp games generally.

The idea is that of a "Robot Republic" set up by a shady, morally ambiguous brain-in-a-jar type, Professor Peabody.  The Prof provides refuge for newly sentient or recently discarded robots.  As a result he has a large force of robots in all shapes and sizes to call upon.  Importantly, this also allows me to paint a large variety of different miniatures rather than the drudge of a uniform force of functionally identical figures.

About half of the figures are Megaminis with the rest coming from various sources.

As is always the case with my painting these days the figures are base coated, each colour usually gets one quick highlight/drybrush and then the figure is dipped.  It gives ok to good results but importantly it gives me high turnover.

All figures bar two (ENF0RC3RBOT and Z3R0 were painted a few years ago) have been painted in this fashion over the last two months or so in addition to the other pulp sci-fi related stuff mentioned earlier.

Any comments or criticisms are very welcome!

The Prof is a West Wind Superfig.  I *think* that the blister contained the Prof (I think that the official name for the figure is "Zero Device") and the figure below "Jump Monkey".

A blister well woth its cost in terms of amusing sci-fi nonsense I am sure you will agree :)

Yes, that is Zero Device and Jump Monkey. SuperFigs are no longer carried or manufactured by West Wind, but rather, by Old Glory, though I maintain creative control.

You can buy them here:

And yes, I am still working on getting a UK/European seller.

Great looking stuff, Cheetor, as always!

I bought them in an online sale about five years ago.  I *think* that they are Excalibre miniatures but I could easily be wrong.

I do too :)
Its a ripped off idea from an ABC Warriors comic that featured two large bailiff robots called B1L and B3N.  The two characters featured for about three pages before the Warriors tore them to pieces but the names stuck with me.

The two miniatures that I used are quite similar to each other so it seemed logical to paint them as a duo.  The figures had "LOVE" and "HATE" sculpted on to their codpieces that I was intent on getting rid off.  The flat areas left over seemed like a good place to paint their names (with pretty wobbly , rushed lettering).  The fact that they are obvious rip-offs of the ABC Warrior Hammerstein clinched it.

Haha!

Those mega minis robots are pretty great. Perhaps my sci-fi scrunt merchants should have some for their land train.
