Review: Bikers by em4
« on: July 18, 2009, 08:00:04 AM »
As promised some time ago in the wake of my West Wind biker gang review, this week's Screaming Alpha update includes a review of several of em4's bikers on foot. These are the old sculpts that Mark Copplestone did for Grenadier some time back, and his trademark attention to detail is very much in evidence. Despite some strange choices of weapons and almost orklike level of beefiness, these are some first rate minis.

Another great review, Curryman. Keep them coming!

I agree, some (most?) of the weapons are too OTT for present-day games, but for near-future etc they work fine. Mine are used for 5150 games in out of the way colonies (think of the Firefly 'Verse) so a mix of futuristic and contemporary stuff works well for me.

It would be nice to have a few "runty" or "athlete" types mixed in to give more of an irregular look, but they are very nice figures and fit in well with his own later range.

Thanks for the review. I've read several of your reviews now and I find them very helpful.

As to the equipment issues with the bikers, i think they where meant to be alternative Necromunda gangers, specifically Orlock gangers.

Thanks for the feedback, fellas.

@MightyFlip It's true that 1.25 each is pretty darn cheap, but em4's shipping rates (at least to the US) are at least double (if not more) what I'm used to paying with vendors like Copplestone or Hasslefree. Be sure to compare total cost including shipping.

@kidterminal Your idea seems logical, and would certainly explain the GW-style flamer.

I can't remember what they were called but I do remember when they came out. Thought it was never stated they were clearly GW substitues. This may also explain their size. I remember more poses though.

EM-4 also have a few motorbikes in their Future Skirmish range.

The giant calculator thingies are Communication untis from the Kill Zone game where they were originally sculpted for. Of course they are rather oversized compared to our modern cellphones and small things like can still make the models look a bit dated. However, since biker attire hasn't changed much in the past decades they still look pretty up-to-date otherwise.

I don't remember ever owning a mobile phone that big  :o  lol

They could easily be used as mobile data terminals etc. Still big, but more acceptable  ;)

Unfortunately, I have... A hefty bugger that was. Well, no actually, I didn't own that dinosaur-era piece of tech. Just got to 'handle' it. Thank Gawd for miniaturization.
