Good books on the Battle of Budapest?
« on: 25 April 2020, 06:04:13 PM »
Hi all,
I'm doing a bit of research on the Battle of Budapest, and so far I've found plenty of online material. However, I'm a bit of an old hat in regards to reading, and I really enjoy having a book in my hands - so I would like any and all recommendations You might have on the Battle of Budapest?
I'm mostly used to popular historian stuff like Beevor and Kershaw, but would welcome any and all good accounts on the subject.

best regards

Battle for Budapest; 100 days in world war II by Krisztián Ungváry.

I enjoyed that one.

Hi, I'm no expert but have in my collection "Take Budapest" by Kamen Nevenkin and "Days of Battle; Armoured Operations  North of the River Danube 1944-45" by Norbert Szamveber.  The former book is about the failed Soviet attack in October/November 1944, the latter is more wide-ranging and cover operations to late February '45.

This is the one I read. I enjoyed it a lot https://www.amazon.com/Siege-Budapest-Hundred-Days-World/dp/0300119852 pretty sure its the same one Voltan was mentioning, just swap out siege in place of battle.

Here is a short review I left on goodreads

I second Voltan's recommendation. I read it after visiting Budapest, really regretted not reading it before  lol
Very good, you'd probably not need to read another book on the battle.

Not exclusive on the Battle of Budapest, but more for the relief operations (.... Konrad I-III) -

Tomb of the Panzerwaffe, by Isaev & Kolomiets

Along with this Panzer-counterattack theme -

The Combat History of the 23rd Panzer Division, by Rebentisch

Panzer Ace, by Von Rosen
