WoR with Sword and Spear rules
« on: 12 July 2020, 11:15:22 PM »
I am just knocking around a few stands to see how these rules might work for my Wars of the Roses games.

I like what I see so far, though have hit the thing of archers not being able to fall back through billmen.

i have put some comments up on the blog. If you have used these rules with WoR, then please let me know your thoughts and experiences. Thanks

Hi Norm

Good to hear you're giving Sword and Spear a try. I can suggest two ways of dealing with the bow / billmen issue:
1. Make a house rule that bow units can interpenetrate bill (in the same way that light foot can interpenetrate.
2. Treat the bow and bill as mixed units of heavy foot with reduced capability bow, i.e. Longbow (R). This means they would fight in melee as Heavy Foot but also shoot with 2 dice.

Thanks Mark, point one would be the first consideration for me on the face of it ...... but, i am still thinking about how to present my armies and I would like to show the inter-relationship within contingents of bow and melee and so option 2 is something i will explore.

I did see the idea mooted on you web page, but did not fully understand the mechanism,  but can see clearly here what you are suggesting. I will try both.

Would the mixed unit also be classed as a large unit?

I am really enjoying your rules and the more I look at them, the more the nuances reveal themselves. Thank you.
