bases for scenery...
« on: August 10, 2009, 05:23:56 PM »
I've got some hedges on the make, got my foliage from Jed a couple of days ago and kind of all poised... but not happy with the basing... so silly questions time...

do you texture/sand your scenery bases, paint and then flock...

or do you flock onto a flat surface (except for any interesting points of exposed earth you want like paths and stuff...)

I'm liking my hedges so far, but have kind of stalled about the basing... it doesn't help that I can't do earth/dirt for some reason and may go to my default I use on my figures of black drybrushed grey/white (hey very dark soil in some parts), but I just know that won't look right for hedgerows...

pics to illustrate/inspire will be welcome...

I texture with Polyfilla, PVA glue and then sand.
Paint using an earth tone acrylic paint, then drybrush with a cream/light brown colour and finally add flock etc.

I use exactly the same porcess as I do with figure bases. The only thing to be careful of is not using too thin base material to avoid warping.

Similar to Malamute but I use static grass. It may be wise to keep the same or similar colour to your figures bases. I tend to use for european earth colour and dry brush then if too "white" use a brown wash to darken back down

am inclined to agree about matching my figures bases... but that colour was more of a universal catch all... could be dark earth, could be gravel, could be urban... may try it on a hedge and see how it looks...
