Billman's Shield
« on: 07 November 2020, 12:26:50 PM »
Good Morning
I am currently painting Claymore figures for the HYW. I hope to use these for NMTBH. I have a question. Most of the billmen and the archers have a small round shield. I am happy with this. One of my billmen has a 'knights' shield slung on his back. Presumably he has no right to bear his own heraldry. Would this have the arms of his master or perhaps be painted a plain colour or just wood  Or possibly something he picked up from the floor of a previous battle.
many thanks
Frank

Paint the shield in the livery colour of the retinue he belongs to.

If you want to know more about Heraldry and Liveries, although later than David's Claymore Crecy era stuff you could buy Standards, Badges & Livery Colours of the Wars of the Roses, Pat McGill & Jonathan Jones from the Lance and Longbow society which will explain it all in detail.

The book's focus is the Wars of the Roses but the same principles apply. It's pretty cheap and packed with information.

Thank you very much. I have previously asked Mr Imrie questions. But obviously he is too busy to constantly bother.
