Spangenhelm at the Met
« on: 15 February 2022, 04:21:48 PM »
I was in the NYC Metropolitan Museum of Art yesterday. As usual, I walked thorugh the Arms and Armor exhibit on the ground floor. I haven't been in the museum for a year or so.

There appears to be a new spangenhelm  :o on exhibit, in much better shape than the example they show online. It is gold plated and engraved with designs, but it's basically the real deal, from the 6th century, likely Byzantine. Perhaps an officer wore it. Of course, there are all the other usual displays, like the 4 plate armored mounted knights in the center of the floor, Henry VIII's field armor, etc.

Worth the detour.
And the glorious general led the advance
With a glorious swish of his sword and his lance
And a glorious clank of his tin-plated pants. - Dr. Seuss
