Liquitex Titanium white
« on: 04 March 2021, 08:53:18 AM »
I've bumped into several youtubers of late that claim this paint serves better than most hobby whites.
I noticed that anything I mix with vallejo white ( a range I am otherwise very happy with) seems a bit chalky and liquitex should fix that.

Does anyone have any experience with this?
And exactly what product should I purchase?
I'm keen to experimemt with this.

Artists Titanium White is the whitest white ever made... ::)

I have a tube of W&N Galleria and sometimes use it as an extra highlight - as with this chap - but usually don't and my whites are still pretty...white.

AK White Intense is my current white paint and I really love it. Super smooth, not chalky at all and dries matt. Best white I ever used so far (and easily available to you in the Netherlands ;)).

I use it, but only for highlights or mixing. It is ‘very’ white!. I tend not to use white or black for figures; I use Liquitex ‘parchment’ (which is off-white) and Payne’s Grey (which is a dark blue-grey)

I haven't used Liquitex white but I do use Golden High Flow Acrylic Titanium White. It flows off the brush wonderfully, is not chalky at all. I imagine the Liquitex product would be the same but thicker as it is a tube. The Golden product has a slight sheen to it but quite a few of their high flow range do; I a not sure if this would be a trait shared with the thicker bodied artist paint you get out of a tube.

I find a lot of youtubers aren't very well informed and mostly promote what they hear from better painters without understanding why they use the tools they do. Dr Faust got some great whites using Vallejo paints if you want to try his technique before dipping into other ranges

Thanks for the replies.

I'm thinking about using it, because I've heard several reputable youtubers talk about it.
It's not because I can't get anything white, but it's claimed to have more pigments, thus better coating. I usually undercoat white as it is, but I'm starting to do my first layer with an airbrush and need some good touch-up now and again. Especially with some models that have rather dark colours with yellow details.

Also I've noticed with Vallejo, a range with which I am otherwise very pleased, gives me chalky results in my mixes.

So I'm willing to experiment a little bit.

This - Artists paints use a far higher grade of pigment and medium than hobby paints (not disparaging hobby paints, it's just two different markets having different needs) so you'll find artist paints will thin better and hold their pigment strength far better than model paints, and the colours will generally be stronger and crisper.
just remember that they're also more likely to contain delicious toxic cadmium ;)
