Kiribati Islands Models
« on: 21 June 2022, 03:39:43 AM »
Sometimes you have to shine on a light on some one that is trying something risky and new. The guys over at Paymaster Games, a company that focuses on native american and Pacific islands cultures have started a brand new line based on the warriors of the Kiribati Islands. Kiribati, formally the Gilbert Island, had unique form of warfare when you compair them to the other peoples in the Pacific, in that they wore armor made of coconut fiber and used sword clubs bladed with shark teeth.

As far as i know Paymaster Games is the first company to ever attempt to bring these Warriors to the table top. I picked up some of their models at a trade show last year that i am planning to use in Tribal. These are great group of models. Here some of the models i have painted. I can not paint eyes at all, please do not judge me to harshly for it. Some of these picture include Maui from their Hawaiian and Moari lines, mostly becouse i like that model as well. Please check out their website for there lines ( www.paymastergames.com ) we really should support small companies like this who try something different.

I don't know anything about these figures, culture, customs and so forth but did you ever bring them to life with your brushwork and basing. What a great looking set!! Thank you for sharing.

Wow! These look good. I had seen such swords in museum displays, but wasn’t aware of the coconut fiber armor. Those could also serve in a number pf fantasy settings.  :o

I'd seen these in the unpainted metal and wasn't completely sold on them, however your painted versions have me much more interested. Well done.

And I definitely agree that it's great to see and support those doing something different.

There was a documentary series called “Pacifica” a number of years ago. One of the episodes featured this type of combat. I’ve attached a couple of photos from the book of the series.
Enjoying the game is ALWAYS more important than winning the game.

Gosh they look rather imposing - at first, I thought I was looking at strange fantasy miniatures - thank you for bringing these into vivid miniature.

Despite having done some anthropology as part of my undergrad I never knew about these... lol

These are really cool. Is it mostly a question of internecine warfare with them? I've been wanting to give Tribal a play but haven't gotten to it yet.  Thanks for sharing these, and for what it's worth I don't paint eyes either.

I like this company.  I got a bunch of central American guys.  Their fancy minis are outrageously nice, though a bit delicate since they are covered with feathers.

When I get to painting them up I'll base them in the movie Apacolypso.

Thanks for the reference of the documentary! I backed the Kickstarter for the Kiribati figs and the Pacific Northwest ones. I will have to see if I can find it on YouTube once I get ready to paint these. For some reason, though, your photos of your miniatures didn't load when I looked at the thread.  ???
