Grid-based Fantasy army-level rules?
« on: 18 August 2021, 02:37:52 PM »
Any out there at present?

I thought I read long ago of a proposed fantasy version of To the Strongest, but can't any info on this.

If there is no recommended ruleset currently on the market I may start working to adapt TtS for my purpose (10mm WFB/KOW/Oathbound style battles, individual bases or unit trays).

Thanks in advance for any tips.

Peter

AFAIK Battle Lore 2nd ed is still available:

Can't speak for this version but the first edition was playable, if a bit basic.

Of Armies and Hordes from Ganesha Games (Song of Blades and Heroes, etc.) is grid-based (or at least zone-based - the board doesn't have to be divided up regularly, but it can be). And it's excellent - hugely versatile and with all sorts of interesting optional sub-mechanics (How do the inhabitants of that village react? Is that a dungeon that heroes can explore beneath that ruin?, etc).

You could use a straight grid to play it, or you can just divide the table into lots of different zones using terrain or chalk. It has massively comprehensive army lists and a 'build your own' mechanism.

Peter pigs - War in the Age of Magic is grid based. I know nothing more about it though but others might.

It is averrable vin PDF though so is not expensive to get...

A fantasy version of TtS would be interesting, especially if using 10mm figures

Of Armies and Hordes is definitely an interesting rule set, with lots of clever interactions between terrain and units and magic. Far more so than most rules. The only problem with using 10mm figures is that a number of the mechanics are based around figure counts - while you can do a conversion (say that a 40x20mm base of 10mm figures is equivalent to 2 x 28mm figures, it might get a bit faffy to keep having to do this conversion)

Someone has done some tinkering with TtS here: https://www.tapatalk.com/groups/tothestrongest/fantasy-rules-v-1-1-t997.html

I haven't tried them myself, but would love to see and use something along these lines.

Thanks for all ideas to date.

I have purchased the Ganesha Games and Peter Pig pdfs so will be busy for a while.

Thanks also for the link to the TtS discussion group.
