BattleTech: Inner Sphere Merc Lance
« on: 16 October 2009, 01:08:28 PM »
I don't know if I've mentioned before my old standing love of BattleTech.  For about fifteen years I've been wanting to paint up a light, recon lance of Inner Sphere Mechs - and a few weeks ago I saw the notice on the WaMP forum about a painting competition for Iron Wind Metals - who are the current manufacturer of miniatures for the BattleTech game! :)  So I thought I had to take part! And I just wanted to show of the result, as I'm pretty pleased with it :)

Your comments and feedback are most welcome! :)

That's a damn fine Mech Lance! You've managed to make them colorful, yet still military. Not an easy thing to do.

How'd you make out?

Thanks, fourcolorfigs :)

Don't know about the comp yet.  Only finished these miniatures last night and the deadline for entries is later this week.  But the rules say its OK to post the pics elsewhere as well! I'll post if I place ;)  Might not mention it again, if I don't! lol

I´m not a big fan of the "new" designs, but what you did with them looks rather nice. That desert(?) scheme is pretty fetching.

Very nice! The gold accents tie everything together, great scheme and execution. Good luck in the contest!

Those are the "Re-Seen" variants of the classic line-up, designed some years after the infamous Harmony Gold lawsuit. If I´m not mistaken, from left to right:

Wasp(?), Phoenix Hawk, Stinger(?), Locust.

And yes, the Japanese mechs were rather nifty. I´m personally more for the "early 80s animé" look of the "old guard" and most of the Japanese didn´t really say "'Mech" (note the copyrighted apostrophe) to me, but were awesome designs in their own right.

I especially like the Locust.
Everything is better with lizardmen.

Thanks for all of the positive feedback chaps :)

@Westfalia Chris: Nearly right - Wasp; Shadow Hawk, Stinger and Locust :)  If it had been a Phoenix Hawk, I'd have had to paint them as Grey Death Legion instead, as I've read those original novels far too many times! :D

My first experiences in the BattleTech universe were with the designs now known as "un-seen".  And since the issues with the Robotech/Macross designs is STILL unresolved, I think it will be a while before we see them again.

All of these variants are currently available from Iron Wind Metals or Ral Partha Europe.  I think I might have to paint up a light lance of Draconis Combie 'Mechs for them to battle next ;)

Aw, damn. I wanted to say "Shadow Hawk" (perfectly obvious due to the autocannon on the shoulder), but typed "Phoenix Hawk". Took me ages to memorize the English names, and here I go and mess it up.

I think we can give you that one, as I only ever knew the names in English and still get those two confussed, too! :)

It is an advantage of buying the new packs direct.  Although all four of these 'Mechs have several different variants in the current cannon.  The ShadowHawk in particular comes with several spare pieces to choose the configuration you want.

For me, though, BattleTech is one of those games where you need a piece of paper with the stats for each 'Mech next to you as you play, anyway, so the miniatures become just game markers.  But it is nice when they've got the right weapons, Scurv, I quite agree! :)
