15mm games where 1 figure = several soldiers?
« on: 04 March 2023, 03:57:01 PM »
What games use stands of 2 to 4 figures to represent a squad, platoon, etc. rather than 1 figure = 1 soldier?

Of the games I am familiar with, Stargrunt II uses squads as maneuver elements, but each squad has a figure representing 1 soldier. Tomorrow's War and all the skirmish games I have are likewise 1 to 1. The only game I have where 1 stand of 2 or 3 figures equals a squad is Future War Commander, and that I intend to use with 6mm.

Can you recommend any other games where the maneuver element is a stand of 2 to 4 figures? I have a basing system I'd like to try out.

Alien Squad Leader uses 50mm square elements with typically two to five figures mounted on each. The number of figures doesn't matter, but that's the basic infantry element in the game.

After some research, I found the following games (which I thought I'd post for anyone interested in the thread):
  • Alien Squad Leader
  • Critical Mass
  • Dirtside II (typically 6mm, but can support 15mm)
  • Fireteam Andromeda
  • Five Core Company Commander
  • From Ashes
  • Future War Commander
  • Gruntz
  • Hammer's Slammers: The Crucible
  • Imperial Commander
  • Laserstorm
  • Rogue Hammer
  • Squad Hammer
  • Strike Legion
  • Striker (actually 1:1, but strongly suggest multi-figure basing)
  • Striker II
  • Trilaterum
  • Victory Decision: Future Combat
  • Xenos Rampant

Missing from the list is Fistful of Lead: Bigger Battles (it has a sci-fi cousin but not strictly needed).  I plan to use those rules for my Star Wars games in 15 mm.  My "units" will be 20 figures on 7 bases, 6 bases with 3 figures and 1 command base with only 2 figures.  I will also have a bunch of individually based figures for heroes and villains - at least 51 of them!  Well, truth be told that probably half of those individuals are duplicates of the same casting, I have four each of Luke, Darth, Han, Chewie, Leia, Obi Wan, and Boba Fett, plus R2D2 and C3P0 - so that's 36 of the 51.  The rest are unique 3D prints but duplicate some of the metal characters just not the same pose but in a different pose.

The Fistful of Lead rules will allow my concept to work.  And it is a fun system.  I don't like the Old West free-for-alls that they often get used for but I think such a game might work better in my Star Wars gaming concept.  We will see.

Xenos Rampant isn't explicitly written as such, but it can be used that way. Maneuver elements are typically either 5 or 10 figures, and depending on the scale you want to gain that, you could designate each element a platoon represented by those 5 to 10 figures. Likewise, one vehicle figure could represent a platoon of tanks.  This would allow you to play out company sized battles.

Xenos Rampant works quite well with bases since you assign „strength points“ to a given element. Otherwise, Alien Squad Leader is highly recommended. Really a nice game.

If I may ask, why is this important please? Can you share your basing idea at all?

Really, I see no strong reason why a base with several smaller figures may not be substituted 1:1 for "single figure" rulesets in most cases (skirmish games aside, generally). In that case, you would have say 5 bases of 2-4 figures each instead of a squad of 5 individual models, but rules-wise everything else could stay the same.

Sorry for the delay in responding. I've been ill.

I came across a set of 3d printable 15mm sabot bases that hold the figures in place with recessed magnets. This lets you pop the figures out for skirmishes or base them in groups for games where a stand equals a squad or platoon. I plan to use them with 15mm World War II miniatures.

I also have 15mm science fiction figures waiting to be painted. I have a number of science fiction skirmish games, though they were originally purchased for use with Stargrunt II. I thought it would be cool to use these bases with the science fiction figures too, as they will fit, so I was wondering what rules were out there for larger scale science fiction games.

I looked for Alien Squad Leader as a digital file but couldn't find it. It was available at one time, but evidently it's not represented by Alternative Armies anymore. It's available in physical form, though, so I'll pick it up that way. (I prefer digital, so I can read it at lunch, etc. on my phone. I do prefer a hardcopy for playing.)
