French - Battle for France early war
« on: 05 June 2023, 10:14:45 PM »
Hey!

I'm looking at building a sturdy force of early war French, I would also like some sengal lads too.

So far i have found https://www.wargamingminiatures.uk/collections/french-20mm   which looks quite extensive.

Also competing are https://lancerminiatures.com/product-category/20mm/20mm-ww2-figures/20mm-ww2-figures-ww2-blitzkrieg-french/    which look a little dated but ridiculously good value for money.

SHQ https://shqltd.com/product-category/20mm-ww-ii-ranges/wwii-alies/french/french-infantry/ also do a range, i remeber this company from when i was young in the 80s :)

Crucially does anybody know how the above motely crews mix and how they scale, i dont want old school 23-25mm stuff? Plus is it right i can use WW1 french for extra variation?

Any tips much appreciated - Italians will be next :)

kind regards The Fish

Don’t know about 20mm ranges.

But yes you can certainly add in late WWI infantry into 1940 french units. The recent Wargames Atlantic plastic set covers both wars with the same core bodies just with different weapons.

A key for a 1940s French force are the funky tanks with their colourful camo schemes.

I just started a France 1940 Campaign. We have played two games so far.  See if you get any ideas, check out my Flickr page. Be sure to click on "Show more" underneath the album title banner.

I have Lancer figures partly because of the cost but also I bought them even cheaper in a sale. They are fine but caricatured and won't fit/match with anything else. The EWM range is probably the most complete even if they are a tad crude compared to today's best sculpts.

The Simon´s soldiers range is very nice (and they also have a nice 1940 German range). The EWM figures are slightly taller, but the two lines work reasonably well together.

I'm modeling a 1940 French Army in 28mm scale, but since these are stl files it is possible to scale it to 20mm. I have for the moment essentially the "classic" infantry, Adrian helmet, khaki outfit, Lebel and MAS36 rifles. I will soon have colonial troops (Senegalese) and motorized infantry. Here is the link, do not hesitate to ask me questions if you are interested.
