Looking for rules recommendations - early war Western Front
« on: 15 August 2023, 05:54:21 AM »
My friend returned my WWI armies to me which he had been storing for some time.  I now have a fairly large selection of individually-based figures for the Western Front for 1914-15, especially Germans (over 250 infantry!).

So I am looking for recommendations for the best rule system to use with all these figures.  I've previously used Chris Peers' 'Contemptible Little Soldiers' and the now out of print WHW 'Great War'.  I'd be thrilled to see any other suggestions, especially if they have an opportunity to use 250+ German infantry!

Thanks in advance :)

We enjoy If the Lord Spares us by the Lardies for WWI. Whilst written for Mosempotemia it is directly usable for Western front.

It is written for 15mm figures, with two figures to a stand, but I’d go with 1x 28mm figure to represent a stand and it should be fine.

What about the Two Fat Lardies' other set, "Through the Mud and the Blood"?  They are meant to cover the whole period of the war and are for 30-100 figures per side. As well as the rules there are several  volumes available for purchase on their website with articles and scenarios etc etc. I haven't played them for many years so can't really comment on how good they are.

There's reviews of various rule sets most notably for WW1 by this youtuber:

Not sure of a game for 250+, most with that size tend to be multi based regiments type affairs so your maybe looking for Company sized action.

So the Lardi games would seem to more suit that size. Generally you get Skirmish Trench Raids, Company Sized or big battles for WW1.

There's an adaption for The Men Who Would be Kings to WW1

Good Hunting.

Thanks for the suggestions, I will check them all out.  I'm already a fan of both Chain of Command and TMWWBK, and I've got a copy of ITLSU, so easy to follow up on those.

Cheers!
