BARRITUS!-The Last Roman Border Patrol vs the World
« on: 04 April 2023, 01:54:59 AM »
Salve amicis,

I decided to get into SAGA at the instigation of several friends. They wanted me to do Age of Alexander but I'm very much more an 'end of antiquity' and 'Roma Invicta' sort of guy (much as I love spanakopita) so I wound up doing the Roman Army at the border from the Age of Invasions book. After reading Jordanes' Getica and Romana before deciding to throw out all previous knowledge of clothing dye availability and going with the rule of cool.

Below is my stalwart little band of limitanei and a few Comitatensis trying to scrape by in the Kingdom of Soissons. Their leader is the redoubtable but young Felix Cyronaicus, eager to prove his commitment to what is left of the dream that was Rome.

Expect sporadic battle report updates until I can a local scene going! (Hopefully, some will even be slightly more accurate than the guaranteed Epirus v. Soisson matches you're going to witness!)

"There are those who seek knowledge for the sake of knowledge; that is Curiosity.

There are those who seek knowledge to be known by others; that is Vanity.

There are those who seek knowledge in order to serve; that is Love.”

Age of Invasions would be my preferred period too. That and Crusades.

Had a match of epic last weekend, where we got two new players into the game! We collectively had so much fun we forgot to take pictures! I've got more games coming this Saturday, so hopefully some actual batreps soon!

Salve, citizens! News from the front! A (more than slightly) anachronistic report for you. Felix and the limitanei played a free for all in SAGA versus Epirote successors and Normans. Our Norman player borrowed my second songs (the only medieval miles minis we had) to playtest. He did very well.

Points were scored as follows: 1 point for every charge that contacts the enemy, and one point for every surviving unit. I rolled to deploy first and so castled up in the corner, determined to maximize my manuballista's uses and slow down potential charges. The Epirotes deployed opposite me with the Normans very aggressively sited on the hill to charge us both.

The Normans swung toward the Greeks after some politicking and moved to crush the phalanx using William the Conqueror's extra We Obey rule. Unfortunately, the Epirotes seemed unable to fail an armor save in melee, and two units of knights required an exhausted William to finally crush the single unit of warriors. This left William exposed. The Normans quickly scrambled their surviving knights into a blocking force to keep their warlord alive. Unfortunately, the pikemen cleared the way to William, and the Epirote warlord finished him handily.

While all this unfolded, I turned my archer warriors and manuballista to clearing out the Epirotes' infantry and a unit of 8 companion cavalry on my left to no avail; the enemy simply couldn't fail an armor save! The Norman archers proved their discipline and valour, repeatedly harrying and eventually killing not only the enemy elephant but devastating 2 units of pike warriors as well. They definitely deserve a medal for the unit of the game!

In the end, due to my few charges and lack of losses, the norman's extreme aggression and losses, and the Greek counterattacks and lack of losses, by the end of turn 6 the game was Romans 10, Normans 10, Epirote 11. During turn 6 the Greek player inquired why I hadn't used maneuver activations to move up my melee warriors on my far right flank. I could only facepalm. Live and learn!

Hopefully, I'll have more battles to come. SAGA is rapidly turning into my favorite game on offer! If you haven't tried it, do yourself a favor and give it a shot!
