Refighting the Gunfight at the OK Corral
« on: August 05, 2023, 12:49:59 AM »
I don’t reckon as you can be considered a Wild West gamer unless y’all has refought the OK Corral.  I have been on a bit of a Wild West journey over the last 12 months or so culminating in the most recent blog entry which is an after action report of the shootout.  The post is here:

https://elenderilsblog.blogspot.com/2023/08/the-gunfight-at-ok-corral-play-through.html?m=1

From that post you can backtrack onto posts about the location, the buildings, the weapons and period sources that allowed me to recreate the fight.  Enjoy.

Looks like you are making progress.  Not sure such a detailed skirmish as chart suggests is my cup of tea but if you are having fun that is what matters.  I'm more of a Range Wars sort of gamer - a few dozen figures per side going at it with maybe a hundred or so unarmed civilians - and maybe some armed, too - dodging bullets.

I enjoyed reading your post. It reminded me of the fight sequence in Tombstone and Wyatt Earp. Now I'm going to have to go watch those 2 movies again...well done. I do agree with the comment on your blog that you should run through your scenario a few more times to make sure the mechanics are okay before tinkering around and maybe making it not as real as you intended. Good luck.

Thank you for the detailed report about the game.  Having grown up in the area (Tucson) and having seen reenactments of varying accuracy over the years and having fired many of the weapons involved I can tell you that your mechanics are most likely close to spot on.  I think the disparity between the event and the game for shots fired and fatal injuries inflicted is most likely down to a couple of things.  Game mechanics cannot handle just how quick everything happened and they are unable to represent how accurate/deliberate each of the combatants were in the heat of the moment.

Everything I have read describes most combatants squeezing off shots as fast as possible while pointing their guns without aiming and there were only two real dangerous people on the street.  Dog Holiday appears to have had no fear of the event as he was already dying from tuberculosis (consumption).  The records regarding Wyatt Earp all describe him completely ignoring the danger and deliberately selecting his targets and firing every shot calmly.

It is funny that even today there is still much disagreement between factions as to who was the "bad guy" in this fight.  I will keep my opinion on the subject to myself as I do not want to pick a fight.

I quite agree lol I recently bought the Empires at War buildings and have a fair amount of Western Town buildings and various 28mm versions of the protagonists of both sides. I'd like to put it all together and it's there I'd like to pick your brains if I could please? I've been looking for a map of the area with the buildings identified but don't seem to be able to get anything definitive so is there a source you can recommend, in fact any useful literature as well would be really appreciated.
Many thanks
JB

I'll have to see if I can find it, but there was a campaign style game for the Earp vs Cowboy faction where events leading up to the famous fight played a part in the fight itself.  Additional participants might have joined on their respective sides, such as Johnny Ringo, Curley Bill, etc. on the Cowboys, and the likes of Texas Jack Vermillion, Turkey Creek Johnson and others for the Earps.  All participation on both sides was done on a percentage basis.  Even though the percentages were higher for the actual participants than the add-ons there was still a chance that some of those wouldn't be available as well.

Plus anyone who in the lead-up had to hot foot it out of town, was in jail, nursing wounds or was dead were precluded from participating.

That would be greatly appreciated if you could, I've carried on looking but haven't come up with anything a lot of use .

I hope this comes through alright.  First time I've done an attachment.

I think I have some other Tombstone related gaming material that I'll continue to dig to find and share if I do.

Regardless of how things turn out, you can always use the line from Sunset
