Drake's Raid on St. Augustine
« on: 02 September 2023, 08:24:20 PM »
Thought readers of this board might be interested to know that St. Augustine, Florida puts on in September (hurricanes permitting !) a reenactment each year of Drake's 1586 raid.  The second link is to a photo gallery of past such events.

Thanks. Some fun pix (though that "pikeboy" looks really young).

I visited St. Augustine this past March.  It (particularly El Castillo de San Marcos) is well worth the visit...

Youths as young as 17 could join the tercios.  Most youngsters, however, would probably have joined as pica secca ("dry pike," i.e. unarmored to stand in rear ranks.  They couldn't yet afford armor).  That said, who knows who would have been with colonial troops !

The reenactment of Drake's 1586 raid occurs in April, actually.

I had a chance to go down and participate, myself, this past spring.

It's nothing on the scale of 16th & 17th century events in Europe, but as someone invested in the era here in the USA, I'm happy to get a chance to do anything set in the 1500s outside of Ren Faires and SCA events.

A few random shots my girlfriend took:

Focused on 6mm pike and shot and 28mm Frostgrave

I'm hoping to participate this upcoming year. Did you have to buy your own gear?

I'm hoping to participate this upcoming year. Did you have to buy your own gear?

I already had a kit (I scratch my living history itch in the SCA already), so I packed my personal stuff: clothing, military stuff, and basic acoutrements like a mug and tableware. I didn't camp, but hung out in their area. If you had camping stuff to bring, I'm sure they would have been happy to let you set it up.

There were a few guys who showed up with minimal kit and were given some odds and ends - including the (admitedly not very accurate) breastplates, etc.

I'd reach out to the Men of Menendez page on Facebook for info:

Or Historic Florida Militia:

I'm still not 100% sure on the distinction between the two and who actually runs the two pages.
