28mm Julio-Claudian legionnaires?
« on: November 21, 2023, 04:33:29 AM »
Out of curiosity, would anyone have any suggestions for legionnaire miniatures circa 10 BC - 70 AD? A lot of early Imperial Romans look more appropriate for the Pax Romana era, which if I'm to be frank, is the least interesting period for me IMO. Earlier style Imperial helmets/coolus and lorica hamata are what I'm aiming for over the lorica segmentata (even though I know it was in use around this time too).

I think Wargames Foundry's "Caesarian Roman" range are your best bet. Beautiful figures and currently Foundry are offering a Christmas discount. 1st Corps also have a small range of Legionaries in mail but IMHO not as nice.

Ooooh, those Aventine do look nice! Still, my Foundry army which I mainly sourced from the Bazaar of Obscurities back in 2021 is now all painted and has graced the table a few times.  If anyone is after Spanish allies I would recommend the A&A Miniatures ones. Very nice models at a decent price.

All my Romans in mail are from 1st Corps, cracking figures. They released some in segmented armour to go with them a couple of years ago, my mixed gang are ideal for invading Britain or fighting Rhineland tribes.

Thank you to everyone for their recommendations. I realize I might have one more option available. I have a ton of leftover Victrix Republican Roman mailed bodies left over. Would it be possible to use some of these and use the heads from Victrix's Roman auxiliaries? They aren't wearing the cingulum belts, but I wonder how necessary that would be.  ???

Personally I don't see why not? OK maybe not 100% accurate but close enough and (a) uses up some of your old stash and (b) saves you cash for spending on something else. Result!

Those Victrix Republican romans are very useful,

I’ve put Numidian armoured heads on them, making later Numidian imitation legionaries.

Warlord games caesarians with Victrix auxiliary helmets (the ones that do not have the reinforced bars on the top).
The problem is the shield. I’d love it if Aventine did one, but at the moment I’m considering doing one on a 3d printer

I make quite a lot of belts, rifle slings and straps using heavy duty aluminium foil from baking trays. It can be a bugger to cut  straight initially but once you have a bit of practice it's quite easy. You'll actually get a better representation of a weighted belt than you would from a plastic figure or metal casting as the belt can be made to conform to gravity rather than the shape of the figure.  Use what you have and dress it up I say.
