Sikh Wars Question Van Cortlandts Compoo
« on: 23 June 2024, 12:15:33 PM »
Hi,

Question I am hoping someone can help with.

Early in the second Sikh War General Van Cordtlandt commanded a brigade of the Sikh army which mainly fought alongside the British against the rebelious city of Multan. These were uniformed regulars but 2 of the battalions were Muslim, the Sikhs deserted.

I am wondering if there is any reference or thoughts on what the Muslim regulars uniform would have looked like? Are we talking about the Purbea uniform, red coatee but with a Sikh peakless shako rather than a turban?

Appreciate any thoughts or advice.

Yes, there is info on this. For a graphic of Courtland's men is shown as part of Dunlop, John (1849) Mooltan, a Series of Sketches during and after the Siege. You can find the graphics online in the Anne Brown collection.
