Taking Wargaming on Maneuvers
« on: 10 August 2024, 12:53:59 AM »

My friend in the Army is going to be deployed to Poland fairly soon and he wishes to bring some wargaming capacity along on his travels. The US Army (despite it's enormous budget) has no capacity to handle moving thousands of fragile toy soldiers so a different approach had to be taken. Joe is a big fan of the Tercios rule by, the now sadly defunct, Liber Militum (as am I) so I tried the approach of making just the bases (the game uses a limited number of fixed base sizes with the attached minis indicating what sort of unit is being represented) for the rules and then sticking down illustrations I had obtained from the Junior General site. A couple of full armies, some basic terrain and the rules all fit into a box the size of a large book. With any luck he will gain some converts as the rest of the gamers have to leave their 40K armies in El Paso.  More info and samples of the units I made can be found here https://antonswargame.blogspot.com/2024/08/taking-maneuvers-on-maneuvers.html

Good work!

I found the JG ACW figures equally adaptable to be re-assembled to make bases of the size I needed

A really good idea and crisp execution!  Also, I was not aware of the Junior General site and will be wandering through it for some time, thank you.
If my wife asks, I only spent half as much as I wanted to...

I made chess sets from pfennigs with taped on icons when i was in the field.  the board was a cardstock file folder.  Made a backgammon board with coins as well.  Wargames are too fiddly and time hogs, and not many soldiers in my unit were into them.
