Blasting Time
« on: July 11, 2024, 07:18:47 PM »
Our latest 'Regulars' game was a 1930s Gangster shoot out.
I dusted off a one page set of rules by my friend Andy Taylor.
I didn't realize just how long ago he had...TYPED them, until
I noted the date at the bottom. 1986  :o :o :o

They don't have a QRS. Not needed as the whole set of rules
fit on one side of an A4 piece of paper. :D

The story so far.
There is a turf war ongoing between the Highfield Gang (Bob, aka Flatpack)
and the Westbury Mob (Dave & Ian, aka Westbury).
On a chilly spring morning six Highfield soldiers are preparing to leave a safe house,
only it ain't gunna be dat safe.
A Mayflower Transit truck passes the turn off to the house. Nothing suspicious in that.
As it carries on down the road an Ambulance, sirens wailing, races up & barely manages
to take the turn to the house.
What's going on? the bemused Highfield gang want to know.
They soon find out as Westbury hoodlums pile out of both vehicles. The fight is on!

790 = Bob's troops. From left to right:- Grumpy Graham, Doc, T.C., Benny (The ball),
          Dibble & Pat.
792 = Ian's. Again from left to right:-Big Boy Wilson, Mad Dog Micky, Sean McConnery,
Fancy, Dude & Machine Gun Garnett.
793 = Dave's Crew (left to right):- Long Tom, Jack Spade, Little Jimmy, Talks-a-lot Annie,
          Big 'D' & Micky Mic.
NB the players named their own teams, that was task No. One. :)

796 = The set up. Bob- The house, Ian the Truck & Dave the Ambulance.
797 = Bob wondering, 'Wot de F**K is going on!?!?'
798 = Ian sneaking up on Bob's flank. A look at Ian's ammo expenditure (while
tidying the game away) shows that in total his group fired FOUR shells.
In fact four out of his six figures didn't fire AT ALL !!! (& that included
Machine Gun Garnett with his Tommy Gun. :o. But then Ian still had
all of his crew upright at the end. :D
799= Dave piling out of the Ambulance.
800= Bob opens up.  Dave & Bob exchanged a hail of lead (56 shots between them!)
Which could explain why they both had casualties. :'(

The fighting went thick & fast, but I'll leave it to the others to fill in the details
as I had to disappear during the game.

803= One of Dave's men down.
804= With two of his 'Pushing up daisies' Bob retreats back into the house.
805= Ian closing in
806= A close up of the Ambulance
807= One of Bob's casualties
808= Another of Dave's goes down.
788 & 789 = The Coppers, who no doubt had to clean up this mess. ;)

I thought the rules worked well, would use them again, though I hope not
to leave it so long next time.

A straight up shoot out then?
How does it compare to FFoL? Particularly the method of activation?
I am going to build a wargames army, a big beautiful wargames army, and Mexico is going to pay for it.

2019 Painting Challenge :
figures bought: 500+
figures painted: 57
9 vehicles painted
4 terrain pieces scratchbuilt

Yes
Simpler (focuses on just shoot ups)
Random activation. Could be dice, I chose cards (similar to FFoL but no specials)

I'll show you them next time you're over.

My highfield gang did nothing wrong !
Just doing a little moonshine to keep the money coming in.
The Westbury boys weren’t happy.

First thing we know, they turn up in a truck and an ambulance !

Well, we got to defend ourselves.

My boys went down like flys.

We raced back into the house for cover. Those Westbury boys were everywhere.

It was all over in a couple of minutes.
We had nowhere to go.

It was ‘GAME OVER’ for the Highfield mob.

Fun game, with very easy to pickup rules.

Fun.  Fast.  Furious.  Simple Rules.  Sounds good.  Glad to see this thread.  One day I might get my own gangsters painted, maybe next year.  Any chance you can share the rules with us hoi-polloi?

You wish is my command.

All praise & credit should go to Andy Taylor, who not only wrote the rules,
but also painted all the figures on round (penny) bases. I still treasure
work done by him that is in my collection.

Thank you, sir.  How rules should be, just enough to game and not enough to argue about!  Or so say I.

Of course, we all know - or have known - that gamer who could argue over a one sentence set of rules that has more than five words in the sentence.   :o
