A new addition to my AWI Collection
« on: 19 April 2025, 08:49:48 AM »
Work has recommenced on my AWI collection after a three year lay-off as the Age of Sail ship collection took precedence, and as well as upgrading my previous work sees me developing my plans to build a more flexible collection.

This first stage of the work sees new colour parties added to my current collection and basing ideas to be able to better flex between large and skirmish battle scenarios.

Excellent paint job.

Also an interesting read on your thoughts on rules for AWI games. I am in a similar position though with a large collection now, I am finding I prefer the larger games with lots of close order units on both sides.

Just struggling a bit with which rules to go for. I used to game ACW and became a fan of Johnny Reb 2nd Edition. So we are currently trialling our own AWI version. I would still love to find an “off the peg” rule set though. The page extracts you show of RARA showing the five bases make me think of JB.

I used to use Black Powder but found some games had some odd situations occurring. May try the second edition rules.

Hi Chaps, thanks for your comments, much appreciated.

armchairgeneral - I have a feeling we are not alone in the search for the ideal set of AWI rules to adequately cater to the variety of actions and bigger battles that makes the theatre so appealing regards horse & musket.

I have built up a voluminous collection of AWI rules over the year, printed and off the net developments and well know that the perfect set of rules are like unicorns, incredibly rare.

That said, I have had the luxury of taking the time out during my recent wargames room refit that has since moved on to other room and loft clearances at the prompting of my wife, that has had the effect of bringing that mental clarity and refreshed approach to life that such clear-outs often bring. I now feel highly motivated to get stuck into the plan outlined on the blog for my AWI collection, together with other work around my Romano-Dacians and Wars of the Roses projects, so I'm hoping to have made significant progress by years-end when I sit down to to my annual review and new-year plan.

For the smaller games I thought Rebels and Patriots seemed quite good. As it is written to encompass ACW the firing casualties seems quite heavy for AWI so this would just need to be tweeked.

Not sure if it was considered already, but I use Rank and File for my 'battle scale' AWI games.  Seems to work well.

Oh, and nice work.

Have you tried British Grenadier? I find them excellent
