Suggestions for furled longship sail?
« on: 25 January 2025, 04:58:59 PM »
Hi everyone! I have a 28mm resin Viking longship that I've painted up. It includes only a simple dowel for the mast and nothing for the sail. I plan on affixing a spar crosspiece to the dowel, which I think I can handle. However, I am looking for suggestions on how to create the furled sail.

Here are some Google images that I snipped from the internet to illustrate what I mean. I picked up a sheet of red and white striped scrapbooking paper at a local craft store, so I do have paper to make it out, if folks suggest that.

Thanks in advance!

Mike,
My go to is metal ducting tape as it can be cut to fit and hold its shape.
Here are some small examples:

This is what I am talking about:

Since it is self adhesive, you just apply it to paper and cut to shape.  It takes a little bit of practice to get it to hang naturally but once you figure out what works for you, it is dead easy.

1. Greenstuff or any other suitable modelling putty. Rolled into a sausage and then sculpt the folds in using a suitable tool.

2. DAS modelling clay, as per above.

3. Tissue paper folded multiple times and soaked in a white glue and water mix. Messy and while I've tried this on smaller items, not on something that large.

4. Cloth is an option but the weight of cloth means that the folds never look like in-scale folds in canvas.

Thick foil - the expensive kind you buy for christmas turkeys, makes an excellent and hard wearing cloth proxy.

There's a great method I used to make rolled up bedroll, blankets, etc for 1/35 armor.

The old tissue in glue and water, rolled up and tied.

Mike, given what you wrote about the longship on the other thread, I do hope you are keeping well my friend. :)

I'm doing great. My motto for retirement: "Every day is a good day."  :D lol

The longship work has slowed down while I went crazy working on a couple buildings from Miniature Building Authorities' "Shanty Town" range. I am about to attempt the sail this evening or tomorrow. Wish me luck...!  ;)

Good luck with the sail Mike.
I like your saying about retirement, and I think you are absolutely correct.

Correction on the retirement motto - "Everyday is Saturday - of a long weekend!"  Or so say I.  When I planned to retire on January 1, I was going to say I am about to embark on 365 Saturdays, alas, I didn't retire until July 1 (2022).  Lovin' it, best job I ever had.
