A classic game and quite short – 1 hour and 15 minutes.

Battle report here.

Not heard of these rules before.

What was you opponent hoping to gain by taking a low quality general?

Why did the Poeni appear to do nothing all game? And actually what are Poeni (this isn’t my period)?

Poeni are Carthaginians (hence Punic wars)

Poeni as SteveBurt says are Carthaginian heavy infantry. They were very good - at least as good as Rome's finest. They don't move because their command - one long battleline - doesn't move either. Individual units can't go off on Lone Ranger missions if they remain in command, i.e. are part of a battleline or battle column.

Generals and commanders cost command points to buy, which vary depending on the command rating of the army. Both armies were average so 16 command points each. The cost of a general/commander is the total of his command and combat ratings, which can each vary from 0 to 5. Peter decided to go cheap on his general's command rating in order to improve the ratings elsewhere. But that probably wasn't a good idea.

The rules are my own and are nearly ready for publication after several years of development and playtesting. Here's an overview of them.

Thanks for sharing - that is a useful overview of how the game works - whereas too often these kind of links don’t share that info.

As to buying cheap commanders, I’ve never known a ruleset where this is worthwhile!
