Cheap casualties?
« on: March 24, 2025, 10:54:04 PM »
Can anyone recommend any dirt cheap figures, probably plastic, that could be used as generic, or at least 20/21st century, casualties? I?m fed up with the side-on base look when you tip over figures to indicate a casualty.

Thanks

Doug

It's worth a trawl through Etsy sellers to see what they have; they do offer at least some 28mm 20th century casualties. Although 3D-printed miniatures are quite fragile, based casualties are likely to be quite robust.

1st Corps have various casualty figures for ww2 - British, German, Russian, Japanese, US marines &c - in resin, at 8 for 7 pounds. Not quite dirt cheap, but manageable. Quite robust, too. Most of them have helmets, but there are one or two hatless British figures.

For example: Russians: https://1stcorps.co.uk/product/ww2r13-russian-casualties/ US marines: https://1stcorps.co.uk/product/ww2usm13-united-states-marine-corps-casualties/ British: https://1stcorps.co.uk/product/ww2-british-casualties/ British airborne: https://1stcorps.co.uk/product/ww2bp17a-british-paratroop-casualties/

They also have the same type of resin casualties in some of their ancient, dark ages, and pike & shot ranges.

I've been leaning towards taking plastic figures, assembling into sprawlish poses and then planting them half sunk into texture basing.

We hateses casualty packs that include leaning up or wandering around woundeds, grr.

"Cheap as chips" option - Casualty People Markers from Supreme Littleness Designs.

20 x 28mm MDF silhouettes (5 designs) for 3.60 GBP or 25 x 18mm MDF silhouettes (5 designs) for 3.00 GBP.

Quick basic paint job and you're done.

No need for casualties to be moved or removed if another figure takes their place.
There are 100 types of people in the world. Those who understand binary and those who can work from incomplete data.

I use the Airfix crawling/prone figure for casualty markers in my SCW games.

I've modified the Soviet caualties to use for the Cold War and the Germans as Czechs.

Not figures but cheap casualty markers are easy to make by sticking a rifle muzzle down onto a standard base, with or without helmet atop it according to taste.

Thanks for the input everyone. I think for maximum cheapness and bearing in mind I?m only wanting these for zombie casualties at the moment, I?ll try the mdf ones.

Doug,

What about nearly right size/scale model railway/architectural bystanders. These can also come ready painted (badly) but they are cheap and great for civilian hordes or corpses? Look on Amazon/ebay etc. I went for 1/75 as they are generally slimmer and taller than cough-heroic-cough minis  ;) :D

I think TT Games also do some 28mm corpses in one of their ranges (apologies if this has been mentioned already).

For my Viking Town Raid game using Sellswords & Spellslingers, I use plastic blood spot markers from Litko to identify where the casualty fell. That's because characters have to spend an action looting the figure to get their treasure. Once they do that, I pick up the marker. So, the markers somewhat add to the look of the game but fulfill a function, too.

Because I am me, I have two different types. One for the foes that are worth 1d6 treasure, and one for the ones worth 2d6 treasure.

These may not work for what you have in mind, but I thought I'd add the suggestion.

I made casualty markers for WW2 using old airfix prone/grenade throwing/crawling figures.

They would work if you aren't bothered about people shrinking when they die....

I probably still have a pile in an ice cream tub somewhere if you want them Doug?

They look nice, Mike and it?s funny you should mention them because I?ve just found a margarine tub packed with Airfix Robin Hood figures that I made into Scottish pikemen sometime in 1972.

Thanks for the offer but they the WW2 ones are a bit too military for zombies whereas the Robin Hood might just do the job.
