FK&P Goes Scottish, the first foray
« on: April 04, 2025, 06:36:11 AM »
Many years ago I built a Covenanter army for use with Warlord's "Pike and Shotte" rules. My mate never completed his Montrose force and the project was abandoned in favour of others.

Roll on a decade and I have built up two English armies for use with Simon Miller's "For King and Parliament"rules, but find opponents hard to find as many of my gaming buddies deem ECW "boring to play"

Late 2023 or early last year Simon released an add-on set of rules specific to "The Celtic Fringe" ie Scotland and Ireland, plus a beautifully produced scenario book for the Montrose rebellion. I quickly bought both, together with my mate's long dormant, unfinished army. I managed to find the extra figures I needed quite cheaply from the Bazaar of Obscurities and following tge purchase of some Warbases figure trays I was ready.

Last night witnessed our attempt to re-fighr Tippermuir.  The scenario book gives full ORBATs, map, background notes plus an introduction to the whole campaign, and has been a great purchase. The additional "Celtic Fringe" rules really add to the flavour of the game with new troop varieties and attributes, and my ECW sceptics declared themselves very impressed.

The result followed history, with Montrose's Irish defeating the inexperienced Covenanter centre, plus winning one of the flank battles.

Next will be "Justice Mills" some time after Easter

Great stuff.

We've really enjoyed all our FKaP games - I do have the Celtic Fringe supplement, but haven't really had chance to use it

Fred, as I said we have actually found the battles more interesting than "straight" ECW south of the border. Extra troop types such as Highlanders and lancers, plus the additional rules give quite a twist to proceedings. I can heartily recommend Simon's  "Montrose, to Win or Lose it all" scenario book. well written, beautifully illustrated and with all the detail you need to just get the troops onto the table.

Hello SJWi, I'm Peter, one of the authors of the Montrose and Celtic Fringe booklets.

Thank you for your kind comments about them. Simon produced them to a very high standard indeed.

I don't get to the LAF very often but its great to see them being used and enjoyed. Your game looks very impressive.

Tippermuir can be quite a challnging scenario for Montrose to win with a lot of Covenant units facing him.

Look forward to seeing some of your reports of  the other scenarioes in due course.

Peter, glad to make contact. Both books are excellent. Also, unlike the fictitious "Marlowe to Maidenhythe" campaign book you kept to a standard 12 x 8 grid table. We used the ORBAT with a smaller number of Covenanter units, plus the Covenanter General's chit pulling was truly awful. You will have spotted the bespoke mdf chits I commissioned from Warbases for the extra units/attributes. I decided not to buy and paint figure vignettea.
