Making a cliff (by cheating)
« on: 06 January 2010, 05:34:56 AM »
I am working on testing some techniques for cliffs and here is my test run. Now, I said I cheated because this cliff...

....started out with this already in place...

Now, I know that 95% of the cliff is already created for me with the use of this. But my goal was to see if I could make a cliff that would look like a cliff. So I wanted to start with something that looked right to begin with. By blending my pieces into it, I could see if the techniques I wanted to use would work.

Here is a close up of the cliff...

Now, I know it's not perfect, but I think it works fairly well. I still need to finish adding rocks and all the painting yet, but I think the process should work with building some cliff faces from scratch.

Another reason for altering the original was that I wanted something with a little more depth so that models could be placed on top. Here is a shot from the side so that you can see how much wider this version is from the original. The original piece is in gray, what I added for depth is in pink.

I just bought a couple of these Lexmarc Xmas display bases too. Just need to put a little paint on them. Picked them up at 70% off. Going to paint mine up for the Northwest Frontier/Afganistan.

Looks good! I've been thinking of board-edge cliff face pieces too, funnily enough. No time and no source of 1" pink foam currently, though...

On painting: prime black, drybrush, drybrush, drybrush. Let the black show through at the bottoms of the cracks and crevices, it adds a lot of depth to the rocks, far more than a grey basecoat allows.
