Thinning GW's washes

Anyone know how to thin the GW washes?

When I try to do this and then, for example, use it to shade between folds of cloth, the wash dries and leaves dirty, gritty patches around the edge instead of gathering in the recesses.

I am using water to thin and I think that must be the wrong stuff.

Any ideas?

It may be to do with surface tension, have you tried a drop of washing up liquid added to the water used for the thinning?

try distilled water - only a hunch mind, not speaking from experience of the GW washes but it work for others

GWs Badab Black (stupid goddamn name...) is good but, as has been pointed out before, is a bit of a fucking scam since the pot is sold half full (or half empty depending on your view of the world). This half-fullness I have used to my advantage by adding a drop of W&N flow release (the flow release is essential but you really just need that little) and then fill it to the rim with tap water.

My simple answer is water.  I use water to thin GW/Citadel Washes, however I have got into the habit of ALWAYS adding either a flow improver (Windsor & Newtons) or a tiny drop of washing up liquid to my water jars (I always have more than one, silly I know but this is how I paint).

So add water with just the tiniest touch of washing up water.  I would not use screenwash as I have the nasty habit of licking the ends of my brushes to form a point!

I have a small jar with water and a drop of washing liquid handy... a drop or two of that is enough to break the tension and make the wash flow better when thinned.

I had the same problem. I started a habit of shaking the living hell out of newly bought jars as it seems that the pigments tend to separate from the liquid. The I do as Hammer, minus the water.
And Badab Black is a cool name when you're 13, which is the target group for GW

I know it says Badab, but when I look at the bottle I always see "Badass Black"
