Mountains of Madness...
« on: 10 May 2007, 08:32:09 PM »
I've been working my way through HPL stories, and just finished "At the Mountains of Madness"

I was struck by how similar that story line is with the plot line of The craptastic AvP (aliens vs predator) film.  Anyone else notice that?

Anatartic Adventurers, find ancient civilization, read 'hieroglyphs', talks of ancient benevolent species, and then another malevolent species also appears....

I mean its not a direct match, but close enough to be called 'heavily inspired by'.

One of the best Mythos stories! Just love it. Really captured the feeling of humanity being just a twinkle in the cosmic eye...

They had a similar tomb thingy in an old X-Men comic as well. One of the gribblies makes it to the mansion, and slugs it out w/ Kitty Pryde(?). Great story, unlike AvP...which wasn't all that bad...

I just noticed that this page has a banner ad for AKLO Lovecraft Music, and I can attests that it it pretty cool.
So you started a military Coup,
I'm sorry it only back-fired on you.

As usual it depends on what you like to read.  For me I find Lovecraft very atmospheric and, in places, genuinely scary.  I really enjoy the stories and re-read them regularly.

August Derleth, Frank Belknap Long and Brian Lumley are other writers who use Lovecraft's genre as a backdrop to their novels.
They were all drawn to the Keep; the soldiers who brought death; the father and daughter fighting for life; the people who have always feared it; and the one man who knows its secret....

Brian Lumley sets quite a few stories near here.... it's disturbing to see locals that look like they could have inspired him.
