Malazan Bridgeburners: has anyone tried yet?
« on: 16 April 2012, 12:39:55 PM »
So, through a friend, I've become well and thoroughly hooked on the Malazan Books of the Fallen by Steven Ericson. And of course, being the modeler, painter and gamer I am, I of course began to wonder how many of the characters, armies and races in the books look like.

The most familiar (since the series opens with them) are of course the Bridgeburners, and I would love to add them as yet another wishful project to the already long cue of 'I'm gonna do them one day'. Basically, they're my favourite, followed closely by Coltane's Crow Clan from the Chain of Dogs. I have somewhat based by WHFB Warriors of Chaos on them already (thematically at least), but the Bridgeburners are what I'm going for with this one for the moment.

For some reason, the Warmachine Cygnar Trenchers evoke the right feel for me here, as the Malazan armies make heavy use of crossbows and grenades (Cussers, Sharpers, Crackers etc), and also wear a very large variety of armour, especially the heavy infantry units.

I have yet to compile a list of known features, as reading through those volumes is time consuming enough, so the scouring of the first book will have to wait for now (i like to lift each mention of certain features from the source material in cases like this, to get my incarnations matching as close as possible. So things like equipment, colours, armour, facial features, build, etc, etc).

So; has anyone else tried this already? I can't imagine nobody has attempted a Malazan army yet...
Miniatures you say? Well I too, like to live dangerously...

I'm half way through the last book and have been for quite some time, loved the first eight or so but then found it a grind. The introduction of new characters and groups into the last book took the edge off it for me and I haven't been able to get back and finish it off.

As to the look and feel of the Malazan Army, despite there being 10 novels, I don't recall any detailed description that left you in no doubt as to the look. The closest to me was some of the descriptions in the book of Coltaine's march that left me thinking Late Roman/Norman for the heavies. Not that that matters much, it's the non-descript nutters with the satchels you have to look out for! ;)

Facial features, build, etc. Find as many different racial types and bung them in the same unit! The empire seemed to go out of it's way to mix folk from every corner even down to squad level. It's probably one of the few times you could justify mixing 'Dixon' build figures in with 'Perry' and have the correct look!

Cheers!
