Chaos in...
« on: August 03, 2010, 11:15:49 AM »
I see Carpathia and Cairo... :)

How adaptable are these rules for other settings?   ???

Are the rules open-ended enough for a Modern setting?  China in the Boxer War period?  Mexico in the 1800's?  Pre-AWI Americas?  Dark Ages Ireland?   :D  You get my drift I am sure.

Can you adjust archetypes to create the monsters of a particular culture or are you limited to Lab Creations, Undead/Vampire, and Werewolf?   :o

Gracias,

Glenn

I think there are more goal-system games out there (Super System and Chaos on Cronos among them).

Ask at the LAF, and answer shall thy be given!

It is very adaptable. Scott has posted approximate point costs here somewhere for building your own stuff. In my group (which contains the authors) we have written rules and stats for old west and F&I/AWI (on the Blue Moon site), Wierd WW1, and Greek myths among others.

The systems are very adaptable in my opinion.

First of all, I think that Chaos in Cairo can be used to represent almost any early 20th century genre. The warbands (excluding the mummies) contain the followinh character archtypes:

ARCHAEOLOGISTS:
expedition leader
expedition sponsor
professor
guards (i.e. generic bodyguards, thugs, police detective, etc...)
foreman
diggers (unit of henchmen)

CULT OF SET:
cult leader
dark priest
acolytes
bodyguards
sons of set (unit of henchmen)

SWORDS OF RA:
(great for any less advanced or tribal group)
cheiftan
warriors
mystic
dervish
tribesmen (unit of henchmen)

AND THEN MERCENARY CHARACTERS
bedouin guide
big game hunter
doctor
holy man or woman
reporter
street urchin
two-fisted archaeologist

As for periods other than the 20th century, Scott Pyle also wrote Goalsystem Fantasy (available as a PDF for a few bucks) which has the added advantage of containing the points system. In other words, you build each character from the ground up by buying its attributes, skills, and equipment.

Finally, we recently used Chaos in Cairo to play a Weird Wild West game.
Here's the explanation: http://geektactica.blogspot.com/2010/06/playing-weird-wild-west-with-modified.html
Here's a game report: http://geektactica.blogspot.com/2010/06/when-dead-comea-knockin.html

Good luck with it,
J

I love both Chaos in Carpathia and Cairo - elegant systems, easy to pick up and definitely can be used for other periods. The big problem is character generation. Scott has given some info for how much the various stats cost but it is not hard and fast. I did an excel spread sheet where you can enter stats and equipment and for the most part it came pretty close to Scott's original costs. The spreadsheet is saved on the Goalsystem yahoo group. If you don't want to join, and can access Excel, email me at principlesofwar AT tiscali DOT co DOT uk.

Hopefully, Glenn, it was just that one instance. We shall see.

Spam, while rearing it's evil head seems minimal (compared to past Yahoo experiences.)
