Forthcoming Sudan book from the Perrys
« on: 25 June 2010, 01:17:24 PM »
In the latest Wargames Illustrated there is a mention of a new book in the Perrys' advert:

"Go Strong Into The Desert, The Mahdist Uprising of 1881-85, A Military History And Uniform Guide"
By Lt.Col. Mike Snook and illustrated by Michael Perry.

Out Summer 2010

Looks like a good reason to start saving the pennies  :D

Funny, I just saw that for the first time myself, about five minutes ago.

Hope it has lots and lots of those colour plates, and not just a couple. Call me shallow if you like, but I love colour plates in these kind of books.

I've been gaming the Sudan since the mid-eighties, and always find something new to learn. Funds permitting, I'll buy this book.  :)

Should be worth a look at the very least. Not got the mag so have not seen the ad but I will keep an eye out for announcements.

This looks great, I can't wait for this and the plastics...

Any ideas as to why it ends at 1885?  I know these are the most interesting years, and 1885 also sees the fall of Khartoum etc, but it seems odd that the campaign leading up to Omdurman isn't included.

Because they don't make figures that go past 1885. They're hardly going to entice people into playing a period where they will have to go buy some other firm's figures. ;)

I agree. Who reads a book when you can look at uniforms? ??

Good colour plates are a major reason to buy books. I've lost count of how many books I've bought on subjects I'll never game in (Vietnam, Seven Years War etc), just for the pretty pictures  lol

I'm not terribly bothered about the text, as I have lots of very good Sudan stuff, but you never know there may be some new gems in there. If a new book is well written, even the most comprehensively covered subject can have new life breathed into it.

However, with 30 plus Michael Perry paintings to lust after, I'm certainly very optimistic about it  :D
