Commands and Colors Medieval
« on: 02 July 2010, 03:23:11 PM »
Hey fellas,
last night I ran a Late Medieval game using the Commands and Colors boardgame rules, but with miniatures on the tabletop.

See the short battlereport:

Worked great!

Very cool! Where did you get the hex mat? I'd love to try something similar with my Romans or the upcoming Napoleonic version.

You have your battle groups based on one stand? How do you keeping track of casualties?

First question. My table has a top I made from this great heavy paper that has not really flock, but a fuzzy texture embedded in it. I got it at a model railroad place, and I can't seem to find it anymore. It has survived spills, stains and 10 years of abuse. I have since I created a another top for it using the reverse side of a vinyl tablecloth painted green. So, I decided to take the old top and make it useful.
I made a stencil for my 6" hexes. I had about 8 hexes on the stencil. I then proceeded to draw in the corners with a felt tip. The result was very subtle.

Second. Casualties. For this game, I used a small die behind the stand to keep track of hits. Long term, I would use a casualty base with numbers on the base to keep track of hits. Even better, if this is the route I take, I'll actually have 3-4 stands per unit and remove stands ala C&C. The hexes are big enough for my 60mm stands.

Command and Colors is a great ruleset - wouldn't mind seeing your spin on the rules for medieval games.

I would have to agree that the right number of stands would improve the feel of the game, but it looks great still.

Seeing 3 stands of mounted knights in a hex would be a sight to behold!

The minis are from the much maligned Old Glory. The War of the Roses line is one of their better, and at the time the only kind I could get (No Perry Miniatures around in the mid 90s). OG is much cheaper, thus my ability to field 48 stands with 6-8 figs apiece. I don't think I could have afforded to do that with Foundry.
I've got some Medieval singles. I'm going to run a game as a skirmish with 3-4 figures per hex.
