Tukolors ? Mandinka ?
« on: July 10, 2010, 08:34:41 PM »
A while back the lads had a go at the rules 'Death in the Dark Continent,'

It received what is apparently the club's highest rating.  "Nobody Hates It"

It may very well step up to becoming a rules set that everyone actually 'likes.'  But I wouldn't hold your breath.

Anyway, we've begun sifting through our lead - painted & unpainted - wondering which army lists we're close to finishing.  Of course, club members are carefully analyzing the lists to find their favorite/perfect army.  The Mahdists look pretty powerful, especially during the 2 year window after defeating the Hicks column.  However, I'm intrigued by; the Tukolors, the Mandinka, and the Hausa-Fulani Emirates.  I think that a chum has the book "Knights of the Savannah" which would give a good idea as to the Hausa-Fulani.  The only time I've read anything about the Tukolors was in "The Scramble For Africa," but it didn't have any illustrations of Tukolor.  The list for Mandinka describes a uniformed, disciplined army, but again I have no clue as to their appearance.  A while back one of our club members emailed me a water color of French colonial infantry in tall grass advancing against natives.  The 'French' appeared to be Tirailleurs Senegalais, with some officers in all white tropical gear.  I don't remember what the opposing enlisted men were dressed like, but their officers had white pith helmets, red coats, and I think white trousers.  No footgear was visible in the tall grass, but the chap in red coat & white pith helmet was an African.  Could this have been an image of the mysterious Mandinka.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Is it too much to hope that my surplus Foundry Zanzibaris would work for Tukolor... Perhaps with different heads?

"The enemy? His sense of duty was no less than yours, I deem. You wonder what his name is, where he came from. And if he was really evil at heart. What lies or threats led him on this long march from home. If he would not rather have stayed there ... in peace. War will make corpses of us all."
