Yep, the Phantom Raspberry Blower of Old London Town  :)

Great find Capt B. Might have to come down a day earlier for BLAM and pay this place a visit.
Now that could only be a Goon Show referance!

There's something similar in germany, in Berlin.
The shop is called "Modulor", and sells over 20000 different materials and tools for making architectical modells and so.

Got the printed catalogue from my brother, about 1400 pages, and the samplebox with about 200 different samples ;D

Allways worth to spend some time ;)

Sorry to blow your little bubble chaps, but to be honest from a professional point of view the place is RUBBISH.

Admittedly there aren't too many other options but this is where the internet wins out.

Far too expensive, everything they sell can be found cheaper elsewhere and the service (when ordering over the phone) is dodgy at the best of times.

The only good thing going for them is they can be quick when needed.

We try and avoid it at all costs...

cheers

James

(I should really stop quoting entire posts directly above, it takes to much space)

Jim, I'm sure to take your word for it, but could you point us in the direction of a good source then?  :D

I've used 4D several times over the years via mail order - they are expensive, but they do have everything in one place. To be honest, I tend to shop around before using 4D and work out the best deal. It's not worth ordering from them unless you want enough stuff to make the postage worth it, or if you really can't find what you're after elsewhere.

Having said that, their service is good, and their products are delivered quickly and are well packed/protected. It's kind of like a specialist hobby convenience store - a one-stop shop.

4D is an excellent source of materials however, as others have pointed out, it does tend to be a little more expensive than other sources on some items.

As I happen to know some of the suppliers to 4D i have a good ahndle on the mark-up. It is far from extortionate, but you are paying a premium when buying from them.

What one has to ask oneself when buying from a store like this (and us!) is whether or not the extra time and postage that you will inevitably have to pay seeking the cheapest source of each individual product is worth it...or whther you just save the time, hassle and postage by buying from a single source.

This will obviously vary from person to person and depend on what you are buying.

Red, f.ex. can get his ground olive stones cheaper from somewhere else ¬_¬

All very fair points - but if, like me, you happen to work in the City of London and can pop to 4D at lunchtime, then postage isn't an issue, and they're probably going to get some custom from me  :)

They may be expensive for some of the more esoteric / specialist items for architectural model-making, but for basic terrain-making supplies like bulk bags of flock, turf, lichen and cork bark, 4D look to me to be substantially cheaper than brand names like Woodland Scenics, Javis, Peco etc, and  retailers like Hobbycraft or Model Zone.

And I'd say the sheer scope and volume of lines they carry, makes them worth a visit from anyone interested in modelling - even if you don't end up buying anything  ;)

Well, it depends what you know and where you look.  ;)

The trick with 4D is to find the items that they source themselves, as those are usually cheaper.

What they buy-in from other brand/manufacturers is usually more expensive:  f.ex

Gaugemaster Spring flock is £3.10p at 4D, whilst only £2.60p at Gaugemaster - thats almost 20% more.
25mm (60x60 comp size) styrofoam @4D is ~£8.50p, a certain other retailer sells it at ~£3.50p - thats 2.4 times the cost from 4D!!!

It's a great shop nonetheless, but you can be caught out assuming 'everything is cheaper' - often it is the opposite, but, yeah, a great place to visit and browse in person just for the sheer number of items as you say.  The website is lacking in images and sometimes sizes, weights and volumes of item, but then we're all guilty of that.  :(

And, again, what you loose in price you can gain back in it being a one-stop-shop.
