Charles Stross?
« on: 05 October 2010, 02:19:09 PM »
Has anyone read a book by this man? 'The Fuller Memorandum', 'The Jennifer Morgue', 'The Atrocity Archives'

Apparently they are about a secret British Agency fighting Chtuluesque entities on a regular basis?

Is the man a hack or awesome or something in between?

Yes, but we can't hold that against him. His 'Cthulhu in the cold war' stories are fantastic. I'm not a fan of modern day Cthulhu, I didn't think it could work, but he showed me how wrong I was.

He is a man with great ideas and a decent writing style. Certainly worth giving him a try.

I think I shall. I understand they contain a fair bit of absurd humour, which I like.

I can recommend him, he is a very good writer.

I agree with the previous posts - make sure you read The Glasshouse (next)

IMO its actually better than Atrocity Archive.

I also recommend if I may that you take the time to read Singularity Sky and then Iron Sunrise

I've read most of Stross's books, and all the ones you've listed. I rate them as mediocre, but of some light entertainment value.

For modern day Cthulhu/cold war thriller, I recommend 'Declare' by Tim Powers
