Other uses for these?
« on: 10 March 2011, 10:15:50 PM »
I hope that this is the right place to post this.

Anyway I have a whole bunch of these Belgian Askari:

I was wondering if there was anything they could be used for in the 1920s where most of my other minis are from?
Not too fussed what they could be used as and not particularly bothered about total accuracy, i.e. guns etc as my Sikhs are also Darkest Africa figures and I happily use them in this period.

Thanks

I have mixed these figures with the Belgian Askaris that are produced by Brigade Games for my WWI Belgian Forces in the East African Campaign of the First World War and many Pulp Adventures on the Congo.

You're right this isn't the post to palce this on.  I think Colonial Adventures would be better.

Why not? The Dutch had payed black soldiers from Suriname stationed in the colonies in Indonesia in the period.

To make them look more 1920's they'd look better with puttees or boots, but if you don't have problems with that, why not.
Perhaps Belgium did send askaris as an interventionist force in russia or central asia. Or perhaps a Belgian trader is trying his luck selling arms or other goods with his personal following of askaris, who he brought from the Congo where he was trading. Before his dodgy dealings where discovered by the authorities.
Or a colonel with his mercenaries.

That would even justify an armoured car!

I guess any small scale colonial conflict could use these kind of rather generic askari

Paint 'em khaki and they'll look more at home in the 1920s. Belgian askari looked a little different by then, but there's no need to fret about that if you don't want. Some Italian ones still wore big baggy pants in the 20s and 30s, but as said puttees and boots were on most askari by this time. Again, no need to get too carried away with histroical accuracy if that isn't your bag.

In WW1 they were issued with an interim uniform of this style but in khaki cloth before a more modern looking one was available - see the WW1 East Africa Osprey. I've got some that I've painted this way.
You could possibly get away with assuming this interim uniform was still being issued in the 20s.

Thanks for the advice guys. May try some greenstuffing and add some putties etc although I may just bottle it and paint them regardless. Need some gs practice tho so this could be a good opportunity.
