Frank,

That has got to be one of the most awesome entries so far in this competition.

Composition, subject matter and inspired painting of those lions... absolutely fantastic.

Hm, risking sounding like a spoilsport I think while the lions do look nice the bugbears are actually better in the way of painting. I do agree that Frank's setting is really outstanding. I still voted for the Bugbears as the painting itself is to me the main focus of this event. But with these two it's really down to personal taste. Both are of the highest quality.

True enough, though I must admit I don't understand why you think you are a spoilsport, as, as you say yourself, it comes down to personal taste.

Please note, my post was not an attempt to influence the vote as the vote is, for all practical purposes... finished.

If you re-read what I wrote you will note that I specified more than just painting quality.  Both painters are superb.  I referred also to composition and subject matter.

The Lion Hunt is one of the very few entries whose subject was purely African in theme.  No colonialism, no world wars... stuff like that.  The subject depicts a very important social aspect of Masai culture.

And it is for that reason, its depiction of the social culture of the Masai, so beautifully rendered, that I commented at all.

Cheers!

Ah, I wasn't just referring to your post. I admit that the overall composition is really wonderful. I hadn't really thought about any cultural references etc. but you are absolutely right. Oh well, my vote wouldn't have made any difference here (though it's still a shame that the bugbears lost by that much...  ;))

Yes, quite unfortunate as the Grimmster is a great painter and Champion.
