Fine shot of Les Guardes Ecossais and the Furstenbourg regt eyeball to eyeball....

The Imperialist cavalry begins to deploy, with the Croats on their right flank

Montecucolli, eager to come to grips with the enemy, throws a Cuirassier Regt in on a full frontal assault on a steady German unit, who sit atop a slight rise.  In these rules, infantry have to announce when you are going to let rip with muskets, and then take your morale test.  The later you leave it, the bigger the minus.  It works really well as a rule.  in this instance, the Germans elected to fire at point blank range, however bottled their morale and became disordered.  However they threw stonking fire dice and managed to blat 3 out of 9 cuirassiers, causing them to turn away in disorder.  Nervous moments for the German C.O.!

De Foix's pioneers, having blown the doors off the brewery, retreated to the comparative safety of some nearby woods.

Dead or drunk?  You decide....

The Swedish cavalry are up for the fight on the French left.

By now however the Imperialist infantry have started to arrive.  Here you see the Memmingen Regiment from Schwabia arriving.

Turenne shuffles the deck, leading the raw Auvergne regiment into the safety of the brewery, and deploying the more experienced Champagne Regt onto his right.  His failure to take the brewery quickly is now coming home to roost.  both wings are under heavy attack, and still the Imperialist pour onto the table

La Marine repel a charge by veteran heavy horse

The battles critical moment has arrived.  The French cuirassier du Roi are thrown into the gap in the centre to stop and imperialist attack on the flank of the brave german infantry, who have now repelled three cavalry charges.  At first all goes well, and the french heavies push the cuirassiers back.

but a disasterous throw of the dice sees them broken.  Sauve qui peut!  The mercenary Schlamersdorf Regiment opens up on friend and foe alike as they begin to waver.....

Meanwhile on the French left, the Swedish cavalry sweep the Croats aside, only to be brought to a shuddering halt by the disciplined fire of the veteran Tercio de Naples.

back on the other flank, Imperialist dragoons have found a way through the woods and are now sabring the defenceless French gunners.

a scene of chaos and carnage as the Finns rout as well!

Schlamersdorf breaks under the pressure of a rampant Imperialist cuirassier pursuit, and friends breaking all around them...

The brave German mercenaries, having held their hill all day, are now assailed on the front and rear and are cut down to a man.

Regiment Champagne, as befits one of the old four French foot units, fights on, here engaged in a furious firefight with the Memmingen Regiment.

The centre is gone and the imperialist cavalry are running riot...

The slaughter begins.  The French right has gone, the centre is in tatters, and the Swedish horse on the left are blown.  Turenne makes his excuses and exists stage left and centre...

A very enjoyable battle in which the rules (adapted by my old friend Smirnoff) worked well on the whole, apart from the melee mechanics which were a bit slow and cumbersome.  The rule elves are hard at work as we speak......

Now, off to Africa!

A beautiful and inspiring game and report.

Awesome - nice you could share it with your son.
