Which putty for repairs and gap filling?
« on: June 07, 2011, 03:00:28 PM »
My sad old strip of green stuff is about to be replaced.

I only use it for small things like repairs and sculpting over the joins on multi-part models.  I've never sculpted anything from scratch, and don't really plan to.  I've been using green stuff up until now, and it works okay.  But I don't  love the sticky "bubblegum" texture.  I keep my tools moist and all that, so it usually works out in the end, but I find the process difficult.

Since there are a good number of other similar putties on the market, I'm wondering if something else might work better.  I've seen some comments online that suggest hat ProCreate is less sticky, and more user friendly.   Any other suggestions?

Greenstuff.  After it's mixed I leave it sitting for a while - at least 10 minutes - then it seems much easier to work with.

For gap filling and general smoothing I like superfine milliput best. It can be thinned with water after mixing before it cures and can be brushed on for smoothing rough patches of a pewter casting or small gaps in joints, or applied like greenstuff and brushed smooth with patience and a damp soft brush for large gaps.

It can fill your fine details if you aren't careful with the application but I find it the easiest of all the two-part putties to work with for this purpose.

A very cheap alternative for strictly gap filling would be mixing super glue with baking soda.

Check You Tube for several videos on how to do it.

I'm very happy having switched to procreate after my greenstuff ran out. I only useit for the same things that you mention.

Another vote for Milliput here, any grade. I have both that and greenstuff, and frankly am amazed anyone every manages to sculpt anything at all with greenstuff - it's like well-chewed bubblegum, nasty sticky stuff that's hard to work with. Milliput on the other hand is claylike, less sticky and doesn't deform in that bubblegum like way greenstuff does when you're poking at it.

The only thing I use greenstuff for is things that need to flex a bit - I've been quite successful at making flags and banners out of it, and the rungs of a rope ladder. The 36" pack of greenstuff I bought last year will probably last me the rest of my life, but I'm already almost through the pack of Millput I bought around the same time.
